I don't think he's to blame Momo, just that he should been in the proximity of the centre halves and the midfield being AWOL defensively was a feature of our game. When the full backs bomb he should imo slip in between the centre halves so they can cover the wide areas an he can cover the middle. If he's there he can cover Shawcross. But he wasn't, I don't even know if he was meant to be but that's how I understand a 4-3-3 to work. There's no doubt Shawcross should have fucked it off into oblivion. But if he doesn't I think the DM should be there to cover, that's all. Yep that's exactly how I understand 4-3-3 to work as well Bayern. I can't believe for a moment that Hughes isn't instructing them to do this, so can only assume that the players he has used there so far are simply not up to the task. I do think that Cameron or Muniesa might well be though. I agree with all of that Paul. I wouldn't mind either of them having a go at it, Cameron with his ability to nick the ball and Muniesa's ability to read the game and intercept both are suited to it.

I'd been really looking forward to seeing Wilson in midfield but he's not been promising in that screening role. We really need someone with some bite doing that job and if Muniesa isn't that kind of player then as Paul said we're going to need one in.

You both want us to put a player in to 'shield" the back four against a league one club?. Really?. That type of stuff is why we have pre season matches. I don't really follow your point Maccca ... Hughes has been playing 4-3-3 in every match since he got here. Yet we don't seem to have found the player who can play the holding role yet, either Cameron or Muniesa needs to be tried there pronto because if they can't do it, then we're going to need to buy one before the window shuts. And you think 90 minutes against a league one side will give us these answers? Crikey.

Bear in mind for a second that we shipped four at home to one last season. Second, and more importantly, just because you've got someone doing that role doesn't mean you can't play positive football.

Well we'll know if he can't and to be fair, the Walsall game will be more competitive that a pre-season game, which you yourself was suggesting is the type of game we should be trying things out in.

Expecting may be a bit strong; better to have said I wouldn't be surprised. Nor shoud you be. Certainly nothing to get "bloody livid" about Victor. One other thing; don't tell me what I'm bothered about. This type of comment you make is really tiresome; you know fuck all about me and what I think. Oops sorry mate no offence intended. I was just trying to make the general point that it is fair amount of commitment in time and money to attend this sort of game, and I really don't want to see 11 changes. I would take that as a sign that that the manager is really not that bothered if we win or lose, in which case the game is not for me and that would be a disappointment to me because I want my team to win the League Cup. Understood - and I sympathise. Wht you want is what modt fans want. But all managers now make multiple changes and are not unhappy if they lose; one of so many ways the game today is out of touch with supporters. Unfortunately I can't make the game - my opportunities are really restricted as a long time exile (nearly 25 years) in Glasgow.

It was good to hear Hughes say last night, that he believes the League Cup is an opportunity for us to win silverware this season and he intends to put out a very strong side in every round (that we're still in it).

It's becoming evident that we're missing Delap, his reading of the game and willingness to do what's best for the team and not himself, still makes him better than any of our current options.

I'd go
Butland
Wilko - Huth - Shawcross - Muniesa
Whelan - Cuviler - Adam
Penannt - Jones - Kightly
Subs: Sorro, Shotts, Pieters, N'zonzi, Etherington, Walters, Jerome

Wonder if Shea will feature?
Don't want to rush him but if he's fit it'd be a decent game to get back into things

Thought Shea was injured? Is he training again now?
I'd like to see JP as part of a 433 to see if it suits him

Maybe have a look at someone like Flo or Nessy as well? If we play Ness,we need to make sure we are playing the correct player, does anyone know what he looks like?

We aren't going to win the Premier League, so the League Cup is a genuine opportunity to win some silverware. For this reason alone I don't think that we should be making wholesale changes to the team (at least until we are 3 - 0. up).
