Took me a while to realise the ball was on the floor, Spot the Ball will feature alot of Stoke games this season.

All this tippy tappy stuff is a waste of time as other teams can do it better than Stoke. Get thee clog under the ball and hoof it up into penalty area. Aerial bombardment has worked for you for the last five seasons. You forget that at your peril !

I think some are taking the pass and move go literal. Its over the top to get players used to a ball at their feet. Its a training match. People say no end product but I didn't see much end product from a team that hoofed it up and defended for 90 mins hoping a bit if luck got us a goal. Some people really are clueless. That said we don't look sharp with the ball at feet. More competitive friendlies required me thinks. Correct.

The under 21s also played some good passing football albeit against Norton United yesterday

Are we seriously gonna go with the carpet football tag?
Deviating from Pulisball is obviously welcome but 'carpet football'? Not on your nellie.
We're going to make ourselves look very simple if we profess to being a 'tiki-taka' team all of a sudden. Hughes has never and will never play that sort of football. We'll continue to be direct but with a greater emphasis on being more intelligent when we have the ball. Sparky has never and will never play the sort of football that can be remotely construed as 'carpet'.
I don't see why it has to be one or the other anyway. We've seen from our squad that they perform best when they mix it up. I want us to remain direct but that doesn't necessarily equate to hoofball. Manure are the perfect example, they're one of the most direct teams in the league. Yet you can't label them as either hoof or tiki-taka, they play with a balance ie mix it up.
It just goes to show the legacy Pulisball has left if some of our fans think that evolving from that style (the least passes of any team season after season) translates to us becoming a 'carpet' team.

Who plays the ball to the left wing with about 10 seconds left of the video? Is it Whelan? Tremendous little pass.

Did you watch that video ? I know it was only 2 minutes but it was pretty much Swansea in another shirt....and once we got to the penalty area we lost possession......and considering the quality of the opposition that doesn't bode well. Man U should be the barometer for every other team, that's how football should be played, especially if you have players of a lesser quality

And tbf we did in the end, it was just that the cross was shit so I presume it was Kightly. Yeah we need to mix it up but jees it was the first friendly in tremendous heat after a week of pre-season training. It isn't going to be like watching Barcelona.

Number 16, Charlie Adam isn't it Could be, I just saw the 6 and they used their right foot so presumed Whelan but I can't really tell. EDIT- I've looked at it again and there's not a 1 on that shirt unless I've gone blind.

yes maybe 2 weeks is too soon to judge but the thread title is suggesting what's on show in the video is better than what we have been witnessing under the previous regime and I don't think it is.....it's the antithesis of Pulisball, just as ineffective and just as boring.

Some people will moan at anything.
That is a two minute video of stoke keeping possession against albeit weak opponents. We struggled to create five passes in a row last season - such a spectacle was very rare. I'm absolutely astounded that people are moaning about good, calm possession play which definitely shows a change in the right direction from 'SHIT we've got the ball, pass it back to Ryan, hoof it up field, lose it, gain it back, repeat'
I'm sure the lads are as gutted as some of the posters on here that in 2 minutes of footage they didn't score a goal. To then take from that that all we are doing is playing keep ball and we're not going to make any chances is completely ridiculous. It's 2 minutes of footage from a fucking training match.

Very well said. People seem to assume that after 5 years of watching 'hoof at every opportunity' tactics, any form of passing is just a waste of time and is boring 'tika taka'. Nonsense.

Lol it isn't the pass at 9 seconds is Adam, look in the semi circle as the pass it made and you can see Whelan shuffling towards the half way line then turns round and you can see his number 6

TP's side we're good to watch (seems a long time ago now....)when they mixed it up. I agree that Hughes is no 'carpet football' facist Hopefully we will mix itp & get results.
The fact is at it stands we have signed 1 1stteam player so we aint going to be changing that much no matter how much the manager wants them to. Subtle changes,at least to begin with.

Who was the number 34 playing full back? This. Who was that? Keane or Dawson perchance? Nice little drive forward by Muniesa followed by a backward pass. TP would have been going ballistic in the bushes.

Gave the ball away 5 (FIVE) times during that very short clip to a 4th Division side.
Very worrying.
