Would you mind clearing something up for me mate? I keep looking at different courses and routes, and the word "undulating" keeps popping up. It just seems a bit vague. What exactly does it mean? Is it just a case of meaning "rarely flat" (I.e. constantly up or downhill)? Does it mean gradual or steep?? As for Biddulph Running Club, yes I've thought about it quite a bit actually, and even been on their website a few times looking at the details etc (I got my 10k Biddulph/Congelton route from their website in fact), but they run at 6.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I've got 2 young kids and those times dont really work for me (it clashes with tea time/bath time etc). I tend to go out first thing in the morning or around 5pm in the evening. The Tatton run came after only three months of running but I remember there were quite a few long drags up and down although the road finish as I remember was fairly flatish. The route constantly rising or falling gives rise to the use of the word undulating and basically every route across the Potteries will include an element of this. Even the Clayton 10K is undulating. All those years of driving through Clayton had convinced me it was flat.... until I ran on it The girl I ran with on Sunday has the same weekday problem with young kids..... she won't miss putting them to bed and therefore can't do the Tuesday/Thursday sessions. Clayton 10k, the one that seems to have no downhills! Glad it's back again next year

What should I be doing for the week or so before race day?
Predominantly resting?

What should I be doing for the week or so before race day? Predominantly resting? Keep your legs ticking over with a couple of very easy short runs.

Flying Fox 10 mile route again last night, down to 1:11:31 on a tough hilly course. Even mile 6, the climb up to Hill Chorlton was just below 8.

I was just about to post how I couldn't believe you'd done that at 3:50/km pace, but I'd done my sums wrong www.strava.com/segments/2684807 looks pretty tough.

You used to walk predominately uphill for three quaters of a mile now you run up it. The new route takes out two junctions on the railway line on the road that goes to Cranberry. Mile 1 and mile 6 (up to Hill Chorlton) are tough.

My Tatton Park 10k is finally here this coming Saturday.
Really looking forward to it after months of training. Well, part of that training was to just get up to 5k fitness (I couldn't even run 5k when I started, without stopping and walking at numerous points).
I really want to get under 52 minutes, and I think that is achievable if I get it right on the day.
I've only actually completed 2 practice 10k runs during training. I'm not sure if that is wise or not? Maybe I should have done more.
Longterm I'd like to break 50 minutes but I dont think I'm quite there yet.
Thank you to everyone on this thread who has answered my numerous questions and given advice. It is appreciated.

I think Northy's your man on this one but I remember it being a toughish course assuming it's still the same. You'll be faster because you're under race conditions but the difficulty of the course will take some of the gain away so don't get too hung up on the time. You'll have to make sure you don't go off too quick otherwise you'll pay later in the race. It was my second race when I did it because I put a quick 10K course in about 6 weeks before just to test the water. The quick 10K was 43 minutes and Tatton was 46 minutes.

A total of 220 feet of elevation gain over the 10k route, with all of the final 3km being uphill. I know that isn't exactly extremely tough, but I've done a bit of research and I think (or at least hope!) that Tatton has less elevation for the 10k route (or at least, very similar) to my training route. I might be wrong. I'll be attacking it either way!

I used to run 6-8 miles before breakfast every day up until a couple of years ago when i got out of the habit of it one winter and preferred the warmth of my bed, i'm considering starting it up again, there's nothing like a morning run to set you up for the day, i felt the best mentally and physically ive ever felt when i was doing a daily morning run, i need to start it up again.

I genuinely used to get a 'runners high' most mornings from it, up at 5;30/6am, run 6-8 miles then feel super charged and relaxed for the day, its also an excellent way of curing insomnia, i used to be out like a light at 8:30-9pm most night.

I've avoided the 5Ks, 10Ks and Park Runs since starting back again just in case the wheels come off. I've got to get through next Sunday's 10 mile race and then the plan is to do the 10K race in Lanzarote in early December. A Boxing Day 5K sounds good. Stoke are at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing Day. Are you going?

I can relate to that feeling mate. I'm new to running and I love an early morning run before work. It sets you up for the day. You'd think getting up earlier than normal and running for an hour would mean you were worn out a bit later on, but it has the opposite effect. It gives you extra energy and puts you in a great mindset for the rest of the day. I went out the other day at 5.30am. It was pitch black, very cold and about half way into the run, the heavens opened and I got drenched. You tell that to a non-runner and they wouldn't understand how none of those factors mattered, and I still absolutely enjoyed the run and loved the feeling as soon as I'd finished (a feeling that lasted with me for the rest of the day). Running is absolutely brilliant for the body and mind. I'm loving every second.

Any other good websites that sell reasonably priced gear?
I've used Decathlon so far and been impressed with their stuff.

Put me on the line for a 5K and my race face appears

Did the Tatton 10k this morning.
Chip time of 50:15. Another big PB.
Slightly disappointed not to dip under 50 minutes but my target was sub-52, so overall very happy.
Really enjoyed the day. Great atmosphere. Will definitely book up for more race days.
Next couple of short term targets are sub 23 for 5k and sub 50 for 10k.

Well done to you, that's a great time Don't know whether Telford 10K is full it's sometime in early December and very flat and fast. The beauty is you could take the kids, Winter Wonderland is next door to the park as is the shopping centre, cinema complex, Ice rink, playground, etc. Check out the Air Products 10K at Crewe which is the fastest local 10K on Easter Sunday hosted by South Cheshire Harriers.
