I think I'm going to get into running. Any idea where I can get a proper pair of shoes from? I think there are places that measure your foot arch? If anyone can give me any advice I'd be grateful! I thought I'd done my cartilage in after the first three months of running so I went to my friendly sports physio who told me all about pronation. He told me to get neutral Asics from Bournes and then to go straight to Shuropody at Trentham and get some Footbalance inserts. Cost £45 heated and moulded to your feet so you have a dedicated arch support. I now wear them in walking shoes, wellies and work shoes.
With Bournes going I suggest you follow Northys' suggestions. To the south there is Velo at Stone and there is a decent sports shop in Burton although I haven't got there yet. Sweatshop in the Arnedale in Manchester also have the Footbalance facility and are switched on when it comes to running.

23.5 miles in 3 hours 3 mins up and down the tarka trail and Bideford this morning. I know everyone says it but I'm definitely not doing another marathon.
My own two penneth on shoes - if you've never had problems with your feet then buy a cheap pair of neutral shoes (a size bigger than you'd normally get) and see how you get on. There are some real bargains to be had if you don't mind last year's model. The Nike outlet at Freeport is a good place to start.
If you find you're getting issues then see a specialist then, once you've had a go with some neutral shoes. Take your shoes with you to show how they've worn. I've never had problems myself but I've only heard good things about sub 4 in Werrington, but be prepared to pay through the nose at any specialist shop. Guess it's worth it if you have problems though.

I've just done 6 miles on a hilly route but it took just under 55 minutes. I could probably do with jacking the smoking in! I reckon I could have gone further but I got a bit bored! Once I've done the first 3 miles I'm alright, I just need to keep a more consistent pace.

In all seriousness if you are a bit older I wouldn't bother taking it up. It does your feet and joints no good. Buy a road bike, good fitness, lots of scenery, faster, great social scene

Join a club. All the local clubs offer twice weekly runs with mustering for the slower runners doing about 5 miles an hour upwards. Assuming you're in or around Basford you've got Newcastle AC, Stoke AC and Trentham on your doorstep and you'll get solid advice for that marathon.

Looks horrific! I'm all for women wearing it (the good looking ones...sorry if that's sexisum) but it just doesn't sit right with me seeing men wearing it. Is it purely a fashion statement or does it serve a purpose? Either way, I shan't be wearing it.

Running in tights is one of life's greatest pleasures, and if you want to be a proper runner it's mandatory that they are worn WITHOUT shorts over the top.

Usually gets around 600 people, and the food/drink in the Countryside Centre Cafe after is always good. ;-)

16 miles at marathon pace this morning. Think that'll do now for 'hard' runs until the big day. Does anyone who's done this marathon lark before have any top tapering tips?

I'm just doing 2 or 3 short runs now to keep me going until London. Example will be a 10k tonight, at 9.30s which will be the aim on the 23rd. Main thing/trouble for me now is showing some patience With runners who did Manchester & others going Paris this weekend it's just keeping the emotions in check. Oh and hoping that the weather will be kind too !
