fucking hell where the hell as this come from? I was on here earlier and all I saw was some shit about u-21 players and medicals.
Interesting one and exactly the sort of signing I hoped we'd make. Somebody completely random and somebody I know next to nothing about.
Already I'm excited to see Pieters and this guy in action over pre-season.

That has
1. Come out of NOWHERE 2. Completely pleasantly surprised me 3. Got me EXCITED for once! 4. Left me wondering what is going to happen to the team in terms of 1st XI and playing style 5. Made me think 'Its looking good'
GOOOOOOOAAAARRRRNNN!

I've been saying for nearly 4 seasons now that while he is a terrific person, leader and diehard culé, he's simply not 1st team quality for Barcelona. Been touted as the 'next Puyol' since he was pretty young, presumably more due to his hair than play and is probably the best defender from the cantera after Bartra - which should tell you how deficient the club is in that area (Although Bagnack might turn out to be terrific). Very versatile as he can play just about anywhere in that backline. Charismatic and a teammate you can count on. Had a tough run of injuries that stunted his progress but I think his genuine lack of elite pace, coupled with the failure to seize the few opportunities he had made him pretty expendable. Hence he was signed on a free.
Stoke are predictably getting a skilled blue collar defender with captain qualities. Strange move, must say - never saw that comingFrom a Barcelona fan on redcafe. Not being as good as Puyol doesn't really tell us if he'll be good enough for us does it? I find watching Puyol extremely frustrating. It always gives me the false hope that Alan Davies has melted.

Is it around now when he goes out on loan to a League 1 or 2 side? With over 80 apps for Barcelona was b team i cant see that happening. Does he know where Walsall is

Carles Puyol is a World Cup winner, he's won the bloody lot. There are only a handful like him!! At least he did not say the new John OShea.

Hope that cruciate injury hasn't knocked the stuffing out of him! Fascinating signing though, it has to be said If you see the right Doctor Cruciate injuries are not so much the big deal that they were a few years ago. In America a Doctor Andrews uses stem cell treatment and NFL players are coming back stronger than before they were injured and are completely recovered in 6 to 8 months.

If you can make your debut at 17 for Barcelona, then this guy has clearly got ability. Looks a good signing.

I'll be honest the Puyol part of that quote isn't the bit that got me, it was the "Stoke are getting a skilled blue collar defender with captain qualities" bit.

To be honest mate they sound like armchair fans. They probably are but they will have seen him more than we have and most seem to think he should have been offered a new deal which is encouraging! And from a forum I post on that has a Barcelona section, that seems to be the concensus on there too.

Good signing - perfect cover for Pieters at leftback. Never in a million years is he gonna play at centerback in the Premier League!

I can just see him wazzing up the left flank at Anfield, slapping in a 30 yard screamer of a winner, lifting his shirt above his head to reveal a T-shirt emblazoned with "Triffic".

These two apparent quality left backs could give a whole new lease of life to Matty. He could actually receive decent passes which could assist his game and no doubt have more confidence behind him defensively. I love your optimism and desire to see Matty do well, but to any casual observer, its having Matty in front of you on the left that makes you look poor as a left-back rather than the other way round! He will still give it straight back to the left-back whoever is playing there and when they want an out ball, Matty will still go and stand next to an opposition's player to make sure he doesn't get it! I would love to see Matty recapture some form but don't hold your breath!

Delighted with this - out of the blue, just a pity he isnt right sided then we could bin Wilko or Shotton or both because
they are not good enough for the premier league - pure and simple
(As Mark Hughes will quickly discover next week)

Hughes doesn't understand the system yet. Too young, too soon and a left back. Nothing for me to look forward to now.
