These two apparent quality left backs could give a whole new lease of life to Matty. He could actually receive decent passes which could assist his game and no doubt have more confidence behind him defensively.

I've been saying for nearly 4 seasons now that while he is a terrific person, leader and diehard culé, he's simply not 1st team quality for Barcelona. Been touted as the 'next Puyol' since he was pretty young, presumably more due to his hair than play and is probably the best defender from the cantera after Bartra - which should tell you how deficient the club is in that area (Although Bagnack might turn out to be terrific). Very versatile as he can play just about anywhere in that backline. Charismatic and a teammate you can count on. Had a tough run of injuries that stunted his progress but I think his genuine lack of elite pace, coupled with the failure to seize the few opportunities he had made him pretty expendable. Hence he was signed on a free.
Stoke are predictably getting a skilled blue collar defender with captain qualities. Strange move, must say - never saw that coming

I think we can safely say we won't be hoofing the ball out of defence next season, this is not evolution it's revolution. Viva the revolution!

It would just mean he'd run into dead ends, turn around and pass it back to them more often I think.

Left-back is the new centre-half, or possibly the new hard-working-but-limited central midfielder. Let's just hope that right-back isn't the new left-back, or that pacy, goalscoring forwards aren't the new pacy, goalscoring forwards.

He's a CB who can play LB. He'll compliment Shawcross or Huth well.

When he was contracted to barca he had a €30 million buy out clause in his contract. It gets better and better. While it's an exciting signing this doesn't mean anything, every player in Spain has a buyout clause and they always just pick a ridiculous number, Messi's is something like 300m. 20-30m is normal.

I know, i understand how good they are and he is a good player from reports that i have read and with a release clause of 30 million euro's he has to be special.

Several as well as clubs in Holland. He had a loan deal to PSV breakdown last fall due to yet another injury and they continued to show interest this summer. He's a great footballer, very likable and talented. But he's not elite, he will make mistakes and he will get caught out despite a terrific footballing brain & motor.
Who knows, maybe Stoke would be a perfect fit but he's not really that big by Premiership standards
More....
He has midfielder written all over him imo.
