Why not? It's not the 80's anymore, CB's are allowed to play a bit in this day & age. Nothing to do with his abilities with the ball, mate - I just don't think he's big enough for central defence I think he should be alright alongside Huth/Shawcross. Vermaelen is about the same height and there are plenty of top class PL cb's only a couple of inches taller at 6ft-6ft1.

I'll be honest the Puyol part of that quote isn't the bit that got me, it was the "Stoke are getting a skilled blue collar defender with captain qualities" bit. That's what I thought. I've never heard of the guy before but I have a feeling he'll play a few as a defensive midfielder.

These two apparent quality left backs could give a whole new lease of life to Matty. He could actually receive decent passes which could assist his game and no doubt have more confidence behind him defensively. I love your optimism and desire to see Matty do well, but to any casual observer, its having Matty in front of you on the left that makes you look poor as a left-back rather than the other way round! He will still give it straight back to the left-back whoever is playing there and when they want an out ball, Matty will still go and stand next to an opposition's player to make sure he doesn't get it! I would love to see Matty recapture some form but don't hold your breath! Yes, unfortunately I think that's like saying "once we've replaced this faulty RAM chip, Professor Hawking will feel like a teenager again."

Judging by his birthday being in March that means he won't need to be named in the 25 man squad. Give's him an opportunity to impress without too much pressure so a decent acquisition I would say.

Ex barca doesn't mean much to me when we're talking central defenders
It's the one position, in my opinion, where flair and excitement should be actively discouraged. And physically speaking he looks nothing like a premier league defender
Anyway, I don't know much about him, so hopefully he'll turn out to be a good signing

Without getting carried away, and trying to remain level headed, I reckon he'll be worth £15m in a years time. He'll be a revelation and it will open the gates for Barca stars to start making their way to Stoke-on-Trent.

Who knows if this lad is any good or not but what have we got to lose on a free transfer? It's exciting to know we're after a player like this rather than Richard dunne who we would be linked with if Roland was here

David Cartlidge (journo) TwitterLopetegui, Spain U-20/U21 coach, apparently advised Muniesa to join Real Sociedad rather than Stoke...
Two Spanish clubs (w/ European football guaranteed) asked Muniesa to play for them + offered contracts. Both nowhere near Stoke's offer.

Anyone who doesn't think this signing is anything other than an extraordinary coup amazes me.
Quite incredible change of direction underway.

Barcelona - who the hell are they? Tell you - if Muniesa can't handle it like Dennis, and the likes of Clampy and Bluto - he won't cut it at Stoke!
No doubt some doom merchants would have you believe!
I say, whoop-de-feckin-doo! We're talking Barca and PSV players in the squad. Happy days - so exciting.

The fact that Real Sociedad wanted to sign him is definitely encouraging. There are mentions of him being able to play anywhere along the back so it would be nice to think he could be an option at right back. But the fact he apparently has a sweet left foot along with the recent musings that Hughes likes to play people in their proper positions probably suggests not. Sounds like he will be back up at centre half and left back.
A bit of a gamble but exactly the type we should be making.
Well done Stoke for two good value signings. Let's add add one or two big money signings to the mix and it could be a very good summer.

That comma makes a big difference FM. Yeah = 2 cruciate injuries by the age of 21 seems a big deal. Dunno what effect they've had - but I guess we'll soon see! Presumably we've given him a rigorous medical - and others were interested so that's a good sign.

If he was shite then Barca wouldn't have bought him footie boots for the last 4 years. Barca FFS!! Who's he been mentored by and who's he been learning his trade from??? Good players that's who. Excellent young European signing. Well done Our Les.... or should I say Mark Hughes OBE. Daily Mirror's Disbelief!!Happy and exciting times in North Staffs!! P.S. Marc, if you get a bit home sick then Hector Garcia's in 'Castle do some average tapa's.
