Posters have continually used the phrase "square pegs in round holes" and used Wilson as a prime example for the lack of a recognised full back
IMHO Wilson has served us well being part of a relatively strong defence whilst adding balance to our left hand side.
With the signing of Pieters will this be a threat to Wilson's position being a regular 1st team player, is he good enough to be regular in midfield?
Interesting times!!

Probably our best centre midfield is Wilson.
If it's Mark Hughes' idea to play Wilson in the middle, it could well mean N'Zonzi will get sold.

Wilson has shown his class as a footballer playing at left-back but he wouldnt say hes a left-back in a million years.
I hope he now gets a chance in midfield where Im sure he would be more comfortable.
Whether he is better than Nzonzi there Im not so sure but he has certainly worth a shot to test him out. Otherwise we will never know
Interesting times indeed

If you read Coates's interview he says that Mark Wilson was bought as a midfielder. Maybe this is just a natural transition to where he should actually be playing? I'm all for it if it means no Whelan.

Wilson and Pulis maintained that he was a midfielder, we will have to wait and see if Hughes agrees with them.

Despite all the shouts that we desperately needed a left back, I have long thought that right back was a much bigger problem. Wilson filled me with far more confidence than did any of those that were "tried" at right back. Hopefully we'll get in a right back as well because I don't have any confidence in Wilko, Shotton or even Cameron in that position. If we don't get in a right back, then Wilson would be my choice there and yes, I know he's primarily supposed to be a midfield player.

H I think it was in the same press conference where he said he's one of the best left backs, he also said but he's more of a midfielder. Wilson only played LB because there were no better options.

Marc Wilson.... The best midfielder that never plays in midfield for club or country. Great left back though.

He'll need to have improved a hell of a lot from when he last played in midfield. He just wasn't cut out for it. Will his stint at left back help him with the issues he had? Defensively it should but if he's trying his turn in midfield he might get caught out again. It's going to be interesting to see what happens with him.

After 5 thousand years of square pegs in multi shaped holes can we not just keep Wilko and Shotton as right backs until we can get better and use Wilson, and every other player, in his natural position?

Could the signing of Pieters be because N'zonzi is off, and Wilson is his replacement??

After 5 thousand years of square pegs in multi shaped holes can we not just keep Wilko and Shotton as right backs until we can get better and use Wilson, and every other player, in his natural position? I'll be interested to see where Hughes plays Wilson. Centre midfield is said to be his "natural" position - yet in the small number of games he played there when he joined us he looked quite dodgy. A few superb through balls (most notably a defence splitting ball for Jones to run on to) were accompanied by some really poor pieces of play where he was dispossessed far too easily. When he was moved to right back for a few games he immediately looked far more comfortable there. Then he was moved to left back (to cover for Higgy's injury?) where he looked a bit shaky but improved quite quickly. Obviously he is now a much better all round footballer than he was when he had those dodgy games in centre midfield. But full back is one of those positions where you are much less likely to be dispossessed of the ball than you are in centre mid. So I am not yet convinced that he has eliminated that weakness from his game. Hopefully Hughes will have been made aware of these problems and will give Wilson plenty of game time at right back and in centre midfield during pre-season. I have a sneaking feeling he may play mostly at right back next season - although that may depend upon how good Shotton looks there in pre- season.

I'm interested see how he goes centre midfield. He can pass the ball. If he has the mandate to express himself it'll be like signing a new player.

Probably our best centre midfield is Wilson. If it's Mark Hughes' idea to play Wilson in the middle, it could well mean N'Zonzi will get sold. What on earth do you base that on? Wilson is our best central midfielder? That's a bold statement with absolutely nothing to back it up with.

Think Wilson has the ability to become a very good midfielder, but he will need time to adapt. He won't get so much time on the ball as at left back and he will need to get used to that.
