Southgate might not be the best tactically but he was pretty good at identifying good players. It was a weird season for them. There performance at the Brit summed it up. They played us off the park for large parts of it and Tuncay was superb in the hole. Unfortunately they just didn't have anyone to put the ball in the net. Who's fault was that? They were relegated and deserved to be relegated as one of the teams with the least three points. I'm not denying that. Martinez and Hughes both got relegated. Both have also had successful seasons. Southgate had one pretty good season and one pretty shit one where they played some good stuff but lacked a cutting edge. He has to take a fair chunk of the responsibility. I wouldn't deny that. It doesn't mean he isn't good at identifying decent players. It certainly wasn't Tuncay's fault. He was their player of the season if I remember rightly and their top scorer (chipping in with 7 in the league from a midfield role).

Wasn't he hit and miss because of Pulis either a) Not giving him a consistent run of games b) Not having the bollocks to play him in his best position behind the striker? On the 2 occasions where he was actually given license (perhaps unintentionally by the manager) to link midfield to attack at home to Fulham and away at Villa he put in two of the best individual performances I've seen in years. If he had scored at Villa park that day it would have been the best individual performance of the decade no question imo. He was absolutely outstanding that day. Made even more impressive by the fact that we were away at a top 6 club (at the time). Best individual performance of the decade? Oh dear Rossi, I worry for you at times. I can name you at least 5 better performances. For the record I have no recollection of this game and I've been to Villa away every season barring the one just gone. Fortress come off it. He was absolutely incredible at Villa park and tore a top 6 club to shreds despite playing in an attacking role behind an absolutely hapless, league 1 standard Sidibe (who actually happened to score a perfectly good goal that day that was disallowed). It was undoubtedly our best away performance since promotion imo.

Its not often I agree with Pulis but I'll agree with his comments after that Villa match.
"It was an injustice, but we'll have to take it on the chin."

Tuncay was never our go to man that title firmly remained with Fuller followed by Etherington and Delap. Yes he showed brief moments if promise but that was it and equally he showed moments when he was awful and disrespected the fans away to Hull (which I never forgave him for)

He stated on numerous occasions, even after he left how much he loved the Stoke fans. He was disrespecting TP and had every right to do so. He was treated like shit week in week out for the best part of 18 months.

I remember that. Mama was clear man of the match, put in an incredible performance and unjustly had a goal chalked off. Mama clear man of the match? Nurse! As good a target man performance as you'll ever see. Just a shame Tuncay let the side down by not being Ricardo Fuller. As an aside, Dean Whitehead was simply dreadful. I think he played on the wing.

Credit when its due...it was a fantastic individual performance as it was against Fulham. Don't know why people want to rewrite history. Whether you like him or not..just accept the fact that he was absolutely incredible against Villa and Fulham.

It was pretty cut and dried for me though - Tuncay was a decent option off the bench, but he just wasn't as good as Fuller at playing up front. Now that man was talented. I saw the BBC going crazy over Neymar's assist the other night but all I could think of was Ric doing the exact same thing week in, week out.

How did he do on his German adventure? His career was only going to go downhill the minute he signed for Stoke. I think its safe to say it was an absolutely shocking move for him. It was never going to work. Pulisball doesn't involve attacking midfielders with flair. It would be good to see him at another major tournament. He had a pretty lively Euro 2008 and arguably looked every bit as world class as any other forward in the tournament. Realistically its all over for him. Stoke/Pulis hasn't suddenly turned him into a poor player, once he was out of Stoke he had the chance to prove if he was any good and he didn't, for me he was always over hyped.

Tuncay wasn't in the same class as Fuller. He always reminded me of those guys who do all the tricks and keepy uppys but have no idea how to actually play football.
scfcbiancorossi - don't you ever wonder why no one else shares your views on Tuncay?

I thought Tuncay sadly under utilised At Stoke, he came with Huth and whilst Huth endured sadly Tuncay did not
Interesting how this thread has rambled all around the shop - I still wonder - will we see the likes of Ryan and Robert Huth allowed to express themselves a bit more, football wise though ?
I hope we do retain our solidarity but allow the shackles to come off a little, the signing of two proper footballing fullbacks must aid our ability to 'look after the ball', maintain better possession and leave us fans to enjoy the last ten minutes of any game - not just endure or suffer it
This and the progressive removal of ALL the 'W's should certainly assist with the amount of proper football we play next season - oh ! and Jermaine Pennant our best winger returning to play should help also
and Nzonzi - definitely need to keep (especially if his claims about his promised pay increment are true - i.e. promises made - should be kept)
