About the present squad.
If our supposedly 'clueless' previous manager attained 5 successive mid-table finishes with them, then surely our new, top class manager should at least manage the same.

Should Hughes persuade Pennant to stay? Pennant has gone, he's history

He did? I wasnt aware of that but surely the limitations of that squad stretches back further than January so would be unfair to point the finger at Cartwright?. The move to the new set up, consequent conflict and where we are now, can certainly be traced back to that window and it is well documented that things went wrong in the final few days. It's also worth noting that there were plenty of people advocating not giving Pulis a penny piece to add to the squad and are the ones moaning now! The extent of the surgery totally depends on who stays and goes. If Hughes can work out a way of using Adam and Crouch (Jones will be sold) and N'zonzi stays then less work will be needed. If a player can be coaxed out of the limp remains of Kightly then all the better. Absolutely essential for me are a left back, a wide man, central midfielder, two front men, a back up centre half and a goalkeepeer. Agreed, Premiership squads need to keep evolving and January was a missed opportunity. I think we need a third goalie if Nash has retired, 2 wide men and 2 centre midfielders as N'Zonzi will surely be off, so 10 players if we are to have a chance of changing style. I don't see much change out of £25m after sales

Exactly. What we are now seeing is people realising how tough the Prmeiership is and more so if we want to play some mythical version of attractive football. What I don't understand is what our different model is, better football at lower cost with as yet undiscovered academy players. I hope Hughes has made it clear how much money he wants for players and cut through the new model nonsense

The goalkeeper situation is tricky, cant play them all at once but will all want games. We are desperate at left back and need another 2 players to play there, also another right back. i would also say we need another 4 wingers for left and right, especially with Ethers being dodgy fitness wise and Shea also in the physio room. Kightly cant do the job on the right wing on his own with no senior cover. Just hope the u21s can come in and do a job for us if things dont work out in the transfer market.

Bayern, whats Alabi like? Doesn't he have an eye for goals? Built like a brick shit house and has a canny knack of finding the net despite seemingly doing fuck all else in a game. He needs some regular games at a club on loan next season. Doing what he did at Scunny won't benefit him.

It'll be interesting to see if, like a lot of managers do, he attempts to sign players he's worked with previously.

Didn't Hoilett come through the ranks when Hughes was at Blackburn... or was that a bit later? He signed him at QPR where his career took a real nose dive, but before that he had been linked with Tottenham. If we could get him cheap - one good season and then sell him on for a substantial profit.

Surprisingly, Flo's 21 in September, Bayern. If he's the real deal could be time to get him regularly into matchday squads? Or maybe one more year on loan - if anyone in the Championship will take him. Odd how Peterborough didn't really use him in the last couple of months of the season. Yup that's why I think now is make or break for him as a potential Premier League player for us. Will he have to be named in the squad of 25? I think it's time to chuck him in this season. Maybe after a loan to a Championship side for a few months. Re Peterborough I guess they didn't want to chuck and unknown quantity into a relegation battle which is fair enough. Basically, this.

Will Hughes favour two no-nonsense defenders like Huth and Shawcross or pair one of them up with a more 'Ball Playing' defender like Wilson?
Or will he try and get Huth and Shawcross to play the ball more themselves?

Well Samba, Nelsen, Clint Hill and Hangeland are hardly Beckenbauer-esque so I imagine he likes his centre backs tough rather than fancy

You've only got a couple of players at right wing? What about Cameron, Walters, Shotton, Adam, Jerome and Whitehead? They're all wingers... right..? As much as Greenacre or Gifton were when they played left wing...Pulis really did hate wingers didnt he

Don't post all that often, but those who know me on here know I don't like spreading rumours or rubbish. Seen Pennant's name mentioned a few times, he's not "history" by any means. Club are in discussions to keep him now that Pulis has gone, and I presume he will jump at the chance. Not sure on the club's motives for doing this (i.e they genuinely think he's very good/want to keep the fans on the board's side), but it does mark a line in the sand on their future policy of being in control of signings, seeing as a manager has yet to even walk through the door to sanction it..

Joe So Hughes is okay with keeping him? EDIT: Sorry, seen the end of your post. So the 'club' (whoever that may be) are now re-signing players and tying up £1m of the budget in a player a new bloke may not want. Hmm. Don't like the sound of that if true.

He likes proper full backs so don't be surprised to see DC back in the fold.

Not sure on the specifics of 'club' either mate, Peter and John Coates + Cartwright perhaps will be making the decisions on signings. Not entirely sure if this policy is one i'm comfortable with either. Likewise, Bayern. He's evidently a bad egg, we could replace him with a young and hungry winger on half the money that he's on who would cause a tenth of the trouble too. Should be taking advantage of the fact that Mr Pulis had the foresight to only offer him short term deals...for a reason!
