Technical guitaring can get tedious, but I am a big fan of rural events. By technical I mean any style of playing. The only guitarist I have seen that can play the bass, rhythm, lead and vocal melody on one guitar and it sounds like a whole band playing. His ' prog ' stuff wouldn't be to eveyone's taste but his shows are great fun. Greg lake maybe

Joe Satriani does it for me along with Sir Angus Young and Lord Dave Gilmour As good and as tasteful as modern guitar playing gets imho.

Alan Nimmo.
Dan Patlansky
Joe Bonamassa
Slash, needs no explanation for anyone.
Guitarists I wish I'd seen:
Rory Gallagher
Gary Moore
Prince (fast forward to 3:30 - in my opinion the most underrated and a genuine bona fide genius)

Brian May. Bruce Springsteen. Carlos Santana. Eric Clapton. Oh and Pete Townshend and Angus Young I read that too fast and saw Eric Cantona. iancransonsknees I love that Prince solo! It actually reminds me of Bryan Josh. I've never got into Prince but I'll be revisiting after a Google search for his best solos.

Obviously I haven't seen, but Sister Rosetta Tharpe was rather cool and an inspiration for Chuck Berry, Elvis, Johnny Cash etc. (and a voice like that outdoors with no microphone?).
It's the guitar solos that usually stand out for me so...
Nels Cline (who I've seen in Wilco). I swear Wilco audiences are always weighted to his side (me included). I love it when he shreds his guitar to bits.
Bryan Josh of Mostly Autumn. Obviously heavily inspired by David Gilmour but a great guitarist in his own right - I love his emotive guitar solos.
Jennifer Batten.
Ritchie Blackmore of Rainbow and Deep Purple.
Jon Gomm does cool stuff with an acoustic guitar:

Had the pleasure of getting to see Dave Mustaine and Kiko Loureiro tear it apart for Megadeth at Wembley Arena in January.
Dave is an amazing rhythm guitarist, but Christ almighty can Kiko shred. The next album is meant to be the heaviest they've ever made, I feel like Marty Friedman could have competition as my favourite guitarist if it's as good as they're saying it's going to be.
I recommend listening to Conquer or Die, a real showcase of his talent. No singing. Purely instrumental.

Strange how when great guitarists thread or polls crop up, there are so few mentions of James Burton. Burton has probably been on more hits and more record sales than any other guitarist in history, yet few of the modern generation seem to have heard about him. Apart from being in the backing groups of Rick Nelson and later Elvis, James was a session musician and whenever many of the top American recording artist went into the recording studio they sent for the top man Burton to back them. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_BurtonA few years ago Burton and Albert Lee did a joint tour of the UK. The theatres were packed with middle aged, silver headed, former aspiring guitarists! If you haven't heard of James Burton, I guess you haven't heard of Albert Lee either, tut tut.

I alaways associate Burton with Elvis and latterly John Denver, didn’t know he’d toured here on his own. I tried to learn Country Boy by Albert Lee once and for fingers nearly died lol speaking of Lees, many many years ago I saw Ten Years After with the incredible Alvin Lee And Snowy White, while not exactly visually riveting, could play the guitar As years go by I go to less shows and still have young ish kids so I find myself following the shows advertised less. We like Shinedown and their guitarist Zac Myers is brilliant
