He's playing a bit better this season but if he's the answer, then fuck knows what the question is.

He's playing well so far this season. He's one of the reasons that Pulis is now able to adapt our play a little and he contributes more to the overall team effort than almost anyone else. Many clearly know better so we'll just leave it there except to say...... SJW remains my favourite Stoke City player and should be the first name on the team sheet each week........WHICH HE IS! I'm reminded of a music review about Depech Mode where the writer stated "I just don't know why God bothers with these tossers" ;D BTW: I like Depech Mode too!

I am the 'self-appointed' Champion of Super Jon's reputation and I take my duties very seriously. ;D I just hate the ridiculous level of criticism he gets. There's plenty an 'average' player playing for Stoke IMO.

Heres a Jon Walters stat
In 34 Premier League appearances since November 19th 2011, Jon Walters has scored one goal that wasn't a penalty. That goal was on the last day of last season when he was largely adjudged to have been lucky not to have been penalised for bulldozing the keeper into the net.

Made even worse by the fact that the goal he did score was probably a fowl...either way it was a terrible goal ;D Dreadful and needs addressing.

Hes got a woeful goalscoring record for us and I expect he has an assist record that isnt much better. But he works aaaaarrd.

Evening mate and sorry if I was a bit of a tit in my response to your deleted post a few days back. As I said above, I do go overboard at times where Walters is concerned. There are many, like me that argue about his contribution to the team that tends to go un-noticed and is under-appreciated. I know you'll disagree and that's fine - it's all opinions. He should score more goals and, if he averaged 10 goals a season in his current role, he'd be doing well. I don't know if he'll get them but I understand those who say he won't. Bayern stated recently that Pennant does the defensive duties better than Walters and I think he couldn't possibly be more wrong but, there you have it again........opinions.

I'd say Pennant does defend better, always tracks back, rarely gives away a free kick but SJW has been known to let his man go and not bother tracking, watch Ashley Cole's goal the other week, and does tend to make a few clumsy fouls in and around our box.
Great bloke, great attitude, poor Premier League footballer

I always think Stoke fans who sneer and sniff at the concept of players "working hard" haven't been Stoke fans very long or have very short memories. Or they just feel that as a premier league team for 5 years we shouldnt play someone simply because they work hard? Why did we sell Cresswell only to replace him with a slightly younger replica?

They're two different things though (and Walters is much better than Cresswell ever was imo) - I'm not saying people should definitely want a player who works hard in the team at all costs for no other reason than they work hard. I just don't like the sneering of "oh, he works hard" as if that's a bad thing. I grew up watching some of the most spineless, gutless Stoke players of all time, and for me, the work ethic of Pulis teams is probably my favourite aspect of his management. I'm glad that the players give a shit and keep going.

But if they paid to watch nothing but hard work they may as well watch a Sunday league. Point is we watch football because we enjoy it's entertainment. A player should work hard regardless for the salary they are on. We shouldn't be praising a player for working hard when he's earning 15 k a week. It should be a given that a player works for his money. I accept Walters is a great worker, but as a fan you want to see that bit of quality. Thankfully these days we have a lot of it with the likes of Adam and Nzonzi.

Love or loathe TP he has built a squad of players who genuinely appear to give a shit. Those who don't seem to get frozen out or fcked off. Walters is the classic example of a limited player whose dedication and application help him make up for his shortcomings. I don't think I will ever tire of watching a committed team who actually seem to care about the shirt they wear.

Walters is the classic example of a limited player whose dedication and application help him make up for his shortcomings. I don't think I will ever tire of watching a committed team who actually seem to care about the shirt they wear. I am with you both here. But at this stage in our "evolution" or whatever one wants to call it...dont you think we can now avoid carrying these players with limited ability. If that stat re his goal return is true, what 34 consecutive starts and just 1 goal that wasnt a penalty (against Bolton), then thats just not good enough..and hard work shouldnt justify it. I agree that the players should work hard...but these days we can afford to have players who perhaps dont work quite as hard as Walters but will provide far more quality...and I think thats what most fans want to see. Adam would be the perfect example. If we can now phase Walters out, then we would have essentially replaced him with Adam, who can not only score goals, but hes infinitely more creative and easy on the eye, and an all round better footballer. He might not work quite as hard as Walters (although he does put in a decent shift), but he is at least twice the player. See what i'm saying? I think when we were striving to be where we are now, we needed to carry one or two simply for their work ethic, but we really dont need to anymore...we have a pretty good premier league starting xi (although by selling Pennant and Jerome our bench is starting to look worryingly thin on quality). Put it this way...suppose we dropped Walters on Saturday for Etherington (for example)...do you really think we'd miss him? Do you think it would make a big difference on the end result? Would we be worse to watch? I think Etherington has had a pretty woeful last year or so, but even a past it, horribly out of form Etherington, probably offers us more than Walters. He tracks back fine and against a team like Sunderland would almost certainly give us a bit more going forward. Agreed we dont have a great player waiting in the wings to replace Walters, and Tony needs to prioritise replacing him in January and bringing in a new wide man with pace...but for now Etherington should do. Personally I think Jerome and Pennant would both certainly have offered more than Walters too, but I think we can safely assume their Stoke careers are essentially done and dusted. Its also worth noting that if, as expected Whitehead starts...can we afford to carry another "runner" who isnt going to create chances? On Saturday we are at home to be what I consider a pretty average Sunderland side and we should have a real go...starting both Walters and Whitehead does mean you are limiting your chances of creating chances before a ball has been kicked. Thats not to say we wouldnt go on and win, but history would suggest neither of those 2 create/score too many !

You do expect a little quality, especially in this league. All players have off days but the absolute minimum they should put in is working harder for the team. Walters is more effective than last season where all he brought to the party was aard work but he has to create more and score more to justify his place now.

It's obviously you that's ignored the last two and half years, (especially the last 3 months), Walters has created at least 3 of Crouch's goals this season. Also, I seem to remember Pennant being useless in the last half a dozen or so games he's had, and spends more time rolling around claiming he's been fouled. Don't get me wrong, I was a massive fan of Pennant, but since Wembley he's been ineffective, and can't stop behaving like a tit. As for Jerome deserving a place, apart from his goals as an impact sub, he's done very little and has looked rubbish the few times he's actually started a game. I suggest that you forget your hatred of Walters tomorrow and watch the game with a clear head, then perhaps you'll see what he really contributes.

For Pulis it's about attitude of the player as much as skill. Walters has average skill but his attitude is a 100% correct in TPs book. What he lacks in skill he makes up for in energy and commitment. He does unsettle the opposition and sometimes his work rate feels like an extra player on the pitch. For TP it's always about the team and attitude, he can't stand prima donas.
Nevertheless, Walters doesn't excite me, his lack of skill frustrates me and my heart sinks knowing that he is always going to start. I understand why TP rates him so highly but I would rather watch Pennant all day long over Walters.
That is why I would make a rubbish manager. TP stands by his own philosophy whether us fans agree or not. That is why I respect TP and will be eternally grateful for what he has done for this club. I don't always agree with TP but I wouldn't want any other manager.

I see it week in week out, he makes no assists and offers nothing on the wing, and he his even worse upfront. No assists as in 3 of Crouch's 4 goals this season?
