I love it how the people of Stoke do nothing other than run the place down !!! Probably the same people who moan their bollocks off the lack of investment in the city ? We must have the most backward thinking apathy rules city in Britain Do you not agree that Stoke isn't the best place for a stag night out.

The council only have to put a new statue up and the letters page in the Sentinel is rammed with folk moaning. The pub scene is probably not the best but its the general " its a shithole " mentality that pisses me off. The people hold this city back and nothing else

Theres alot of shitholes in this country, Stoke being one of them... to say otherwise is just silly. We are surrounded by some of the nicest parts of the country though, so not all bad.

In fact you'll see people moaning right NOW about players we have been linked with and players we haven't been linked with. ... In fact we recently lost a friendly match, I do believe there was a bit of moaning then too ;D They love a moan

As someone already said, get on the train and go Manchester, in fact, there is one good thing about Stoke, its very central to lots of decent places for a night out..........
Manchester Nottingham Chester Brum (never been, but guess it must be better than Hanley) Liverpool
All approx 1 hr away via train, maybe Nottingham a tad more?

I am afraid the majority are right, it isnt a good recommendation for a stag doo.
Stoke for some reason hasnt changed in the last twenty years, away fans are still viewed as wanting a battle & you will be met. Dont know why it hasnt changed like most other cities, maybe its because its miles from the railway station so you just cant access the pubs easily. Hooliganism is still all the rage for far too many, but Stoke police have never been very active either.
Its rough and grim I am afraid, but there are worse places. People are great though, if you can get on the right side of em.
Try Nantwich, great old town with about 30 pubs in close proximity, we stayed at the Peacock hotel on the road from Crewe to Nantwich & about a mile out of the latter. Get taxi's in. There are places in Nantwich town centre too but probably a bit costlier.

I went in the Famous Lion the other Saturday, police on the door acting as bouncers,it was like the fookin star wars bar.I`m a Stoke lad,but if had been an outsider I would not have even gone in. Bottom line as most have said, the city is a shit hole from top to bottom.Nothing gets solved, our city leaders are happy to put plasters on everything .and have been for years.

Whatever happened to Stoke? In the late 80s/early 90s coach partys would regularly travel here - The Place, Regimes, Maximes, Ritzy, Shelleys held thousands - and held some of the best nights in the UK. Now there's nothing - and Burslem is the better option! If SCFC end up back in div3 this city is screwed! "The Place, Regimes, Maximes, Ritzy, Shelleys" You seriously can't put Shelley's in the same sentence as "The Place, Regimes, Maximes, Ritzy".

I was a regular down Hanley from 93-99; it was a pretty good night out then with something for everyone plus we had great bands playing the Wheatsheaf pub.
But these days there isn't much to write home about. I simply don't go anymore unless going a gig and then I would visit the Unicorn, Fat Cats and the Coachmakers.
I would say go to Manchester but if you really are stuck around Stoke then do a pub run on the outskirts of Leek and Cheddleton then finish off at the Den Engel belgian bar in Leek and drink yourself to death.

"You seriously can't put Shelley's in the same sentence as "The Place, Regimes, Maximes, Ritzy".
Course you can. Depends which Shelleys you're thinking about. Before 'Piano House Shelleys' it was the roughest club in the city - a miner's club that played Rick Astley just like every other club in the UK.
The Place was one of the first clubs in Britain to play Chicago House (1986)
Then Excaliber (which became the infamous Freetown) was one of the first to play Acid House (May '88)
Then Jollies function room in Longton hosted 'Introspective' which was one of the first to play rave.('89)
Then Shelleys jumped on the bandwagon with its Sasha Friday night - promoted by lads from Manchester rather than Stoke. Entropy took over Jollies and did Rave. ('90)
Then Room 101 in Newcastle hosted Facepaint - one of the first to play 'Progressive House'.('91)
Then Golden started at 101 and was one of the first to play 'Handbag House' ('92).
Every one of those nights attracted coach parties to Stoke. Facepaint promoted one night that had a coaches from London, Birmingham and Manchester, organised by the three top clubs from each city at the time (Luvdup, Chuff Chuff and Naked Lunch).
Stoke was a centre of the House scene. Manchester took advantage of their House legacy (and the Hacienda) to regenerate the city. Stoke council closed the venues or knocked them down.
Our own N40 played a part too in the death of Stoke nightlife, as a lot of the outsiders became intimidated by the atmopshere as various groups began to struggle to control the drugs scene.
It's a shame because nightlife in Stoke was (for a few years) something to shout about.
At least SCFC has risen to be a cultural focus for the city, which together with Bet 365, and rebirth in the pottery industry - Emma Bridgewater & others - are the only positives I can see at the moment for Stoke.
