Christ, we have had some bad managers. How can there not be room for Bates, Jordan, Barker, Gudjon, Quitteral, Mills et al.
Apart from Lou, Durban, Waddo, TP and Megson did anyone enhance their reputation with us??

1 Boskamp 2 Eastham 3 Ball 4 Kamara 5 Little Christ, we have had some bad managers. How can there not be room for Bates, Jordan, Barker, Gudjon, Quitteral, Mills et al. Apart from Lou, Durban, Waddo, TP and Megson did anyone enhance their reputation with us?? For the one season he was here, Boskamp did as well as Pulis had done the year before, but with an initially depleted squad and while trying to revolutionise our style of play. Of the five you've named, only Ball and Little performed beneath what they probably should have done with the resources available to them. Lou will always be my favourite, but for results on a meagre budget, I reckon Durban achieved more than any manager in my time watching Stoke. If you only watched a Richie Barker Stoke side for one of his two seasons in charge, you'd have to conclude he was either the greatest manager we'd ever had, or the absolute worst, depending on which season you watched.

Boskamp had plenty of rebuilding to do but the whole 'bring in cheap talent from abroad' policy pushed by the board fell flat on its face with the likes of Kolar, Kopteff, Sigurdsson and Junior underachieving while Bangoura went awol. Hoefkens was a very decent player in the Championship. They were trying to emulate what Derby had done the season before with Idiakez, Rasiak and Bisgaard but we never looked like having the same quality scouting network in place that Burley had at Pride Park.
That and the whole petulant Rudge / de Koning bust up which dragged on for months. Embarrassing.

Certainly wouldn't include Jordan. Had some decent home results under him and wasn't one of the 5 worst although hardly spectacular.
A lot of people forget that the team Bates took over was on the decline anyway- I think we lost our last 7 away games the season before scoring 1 goal and take Sheron out of the equation and he was screwed from day 1.
Boskamp would be just outside my top 5 would have to say. Bizarre choice to begin with and some terrible home performances in particular.

A lot of the managers we've had in the last 35 years have been onto a loser before they started, given the state of the club and its finances over the years.
That's why I think Durban deserves a lot of respect. Club was going nowhere, but he still managed to turn us into a force, comparatively speaking.

Durban is our most underrated gaffer. No doubt about that.

Why no mention of Richie Barker?
The man certainly gave me my most embarrassing moment to that point with the way he set the team out for that Liverpool cup game in c1982.

He was so dour he made Pulis look like Mr Tumble.

Kamara - horrific run that lead to relegation. Ball- fucked it up massively. Mills - 89. Had the million to spend and moulded a team that eventually went down. Maybe a little harsh as we had previously showed some promise. Bates - through no fault of his own. Terrible appointment by Coates. Little - Utter garbage after a good start.
