Seems a bit harsh to single anyone out after today but I'm going to point out Dean Whitehead who was absoutely outstanding. Great energy, got stuck in and did all the dirty work excellently.

I'm a big fan of Deano, top class again today, also got to admit i'm not a massive fan of Whelan but he was very good today as well.

They haven't really clicked before this season, but Whitehead and Whelan have been working very well together lately.

I'm not a fan but he was excellent today, as was Walters and I'm even less a fan of him!

He's been superb since he got back in the team. Agreed. Loads of slating on here but has pretty much done exactly as asked for quite a while now. I can't recall his last poor game.

He swung the balance of the game back to Stoke when Palacios came on and he moved forward to close down Toure, so that instead of the expected last 10 minutes at the "Alamo", we looked the more likely to score.
Maybe if Scholes is still playing next season, that 3 man central midfield with Deano used to close Scholes down is the way to go?

One of the players of the season for me - really grown in to his role and when he is let out of the cage, he shows what a good box to box player he is. How he keeps that pace up for 90+ mins is amazing

out standing and they wanted his blood after he and Silva had a comin together with a leading arm. very hard to bag anyone of our team in this game, just hope that we can play like this for the rest of the season, because this is what we fans have been wanting

Today was the perfect game for Deano. Whenever we come up against the top sides he would be one of the first names on my teamsheet due to his workrate (same goes for Walters). Today he was superb, got up and down the pitch and made some fantastic tackes and interceptions.
However, against teams we should be taking the game to, and looking to break down, we need other options in there.

Think that's about right, Mickstupp.
It sums up our paradox of a season that, if it wasn't for Shawcross, Whitehead would be a decent bet for our player of the year, despite so obviously lacking the quality we need to progress.
He's proved to be an excellent squad player over the past three seasons though.

Every team needs a Deano. I've been a fan of his for a long time. He doesn't deserve the crap he gets on here most of the time. Am I right in thinking that in the last few matches he's added 'passing' to his game?

Another solid display. Does a lot of the dirty work that never gets credit and usually when things don't go right he's in the group that gets singled out as useless. He's far from useless, him and Whelan have really started to click recently.

The home side were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men in the 25th minute when Dean Whitehead flattened David Silva with a clear swing of his arm in an aerial challenge.
Referee Howard Webb awarded a free-kick, but failed to do his duty by not producing a red card – much to Mancini’s fury on the touchline.
Then Ryan Shawcross halted Balotelli with an arm to the throat as the home side continued to be physical ================================================ I don't want to hijack this thread but I can't believe the amount of shit that is being posted about Dean's challenge on Silva. To me it wasn't even a foul. He went in for a header with his arms raised (how else is he expected to get leverage?) and, unfortunately, he caught Silva or Silva caught him whichever way you want to look at it. Did Webb actually give a foul? It looked a lot worse than it was and I think the ref got it spot on. It was not a bookable offence. The other comment above about Shawcross was equally a non-event. The challenge was six and two threes with Balotelli going downunder the slightest of challenges...it is nonsense to suggest he was grabbed round the throat. Shawcross was trying to get his arm across Balotelli..nothing sinister in it at all. The amount of crying from Man City and the media about our alleged strong arm tactics is complete bullshit! I thought Webb gave them everything in the 1st half and fell for their play acting far too easily. Anyway. Rant over. Deano had a great game yesterday. Long may it continue.

I'm with Ely. He may be an athlete but he can't pass for shit his movement when we are in possession is often terrible. Not trying to turn this in to a bash because He has been great lately and long may it continue.

The thing is if Pulis allows him out of the cage he can actually create, the pass by him to Walters at Anfield was class. The one were Walters should have shot across the keep

As always great effort by Dean Whitehead yesterday but for me he still gives the ball away far too much as does Whelan. If we could get someone to run the midfield attacking wise and have Whitehead playing the "watercarrier" simply laying the ball off to a more gifted partner then he could do a job. That said I'd like to think we could have a fitter Palacios playing that role next season. Still Whitehead can be a very useful squad player.
