people say he is a centre midfielder naturally, but i can't remember seeing him play there? surely if he was best there, we would have tried playing him there with higgy (or another cb out of position) at left back?

Nooooo don't go asking this, please... march4 will be on here like a shot. I strongly advise you to ignore everything he says. Wilson played the majority of his time at Portsmouth at CM, where he was very much liked, and half a season or so at CB, where he was not so much liked. For us he's played there in a few games, including at Old Trafford last season, where he played very well. It was the most adventurous we've ever been away at a top six side.

Aston Villa on his debut. Think he was taken off at HT though. He played a fantastic ball though to put KJ one on one with the keeper, haven't seen a through ball like that since from a Stoke midfielder. Wilson has also come on as a sub against Blackburn (scored) and Man Utd (put Tuncay in for his goal).

If you ask him where he wants to play he would tell you as a defensive midfielder, he played a few games in midfield at pompey but shortage at the back meant he played mainly in defence, who knows if we ever get a decent left back in we may see a midfield partnership of wilson.. palacios!

He played brilliantly for us at CM , the only player with the vision and skill on par or the same wavelength as Tuncay was !! Pure class the both of them !!
I thought we were going to progress (football wise) with those pair . But hey , we might not of evolved yet but we have had some good days out this last year so cant complain !!

Ultimately I'd like to see the two Wilsons given an extended go as our CM pairing...

One of the most baffling episodes of the last few years when you pay £5m for someone with te clear intention of building your central midfield around him, then never play him there?
Obviously wasn't what he was expecting when he got him on the training pitch?
He didn't exactly look an obviously cageable type when he arrived.
You do wonder where he'll be this time next year.

He has played 5 games in central midfield and has been pretty crap in all of them.
In his one half decent performance, v Manure away, he was direclty culpable for their second goal, his sloppy pass leading to their goal, whilst his dallying on the ball in our half, led to their first goal (similar to Palacios against Man City).
He showed some positive qualities in that game but actually cost us 2 goals in a 2-1 defeat.
Wilson will never make a midfielder so long as he has got a hole in his arse. He is not quick enough in either mind or foot. His best hope is at right back in my opinion.
5-7m for a bloke that might make a decent right back is a lot of money when you consider we have a perfectly decent right back (certainly no worse than Wilson) that cost us nowt!

But he played as a very good (by their fans' accounts) central midfielder for at least one full season with Pompey in the Prem. You yourself admit he has good qualities there. I agree that when we've seen him there he dallies too much... but surely that's fixable and not worth completely abandoning hope on? Especially when he's had no opportunity at all in the last 2-3 years to bed back in to what he considers his natural position.

I don't admit that he has any good qualities. I said that he showed some glimpses of quality in a game where he was culpable for 2 goals in a 2-1 defeat.
Every footballer will show glimpses of quality, or at least you would hope they would. Even Whitehead has shown some glimpses of quality now and then.
My opinion of Wilson is that he isn't actually good enough to hold down a regular spot in any position, which is normally the case for a utility player. My opinion is that he is a better version of Danny Pugh, but Pugh cost us 500k and Wilson has cost us anywhere between 5-7m.
He actually played very few games in midfield for Portsmouth but in the few that he did play, they seemed to view him favourably. The certainly felt he was a better midfielder than centre half where he was generally regarded as being "fucking useless".

When JSU first told us we were after him he said he played mainly as a defender but TP thought he was a central midfielder. That tallied with what I'd seen of him apart from thinking he could play in the middle and from the evidence here I don't think he can. And from what I'd seen of Portsmouth he had played at right or centre back and was largely gash.

Marc Wilson or Rory Delap in midfield?
Wilson's worth 10 of Rory these days; he was a disgrace last week, matty did nothing except fill in the gaping holes he left, and when Huth went to throw the ball in to him he turned his back - outrageous!
Give Wilson a shot, well worth a game or two - just so long as he's playing alongside Whelan/Palacios/Matty/JP
Enough is enough Tone, pension him off pleeeeease.

For me, our midfield should consist of Rory + 1 from Whelan or Palacios.

I think I might be the only person in the world who thought Delap wasn't that bad on Saturday. I thought Whelan was a lot worse.

I didn't think Rory was his usual self Bayern and I thought that Whelan had a decent game to be fair to him. He tried to make things happen, not always successfully, but he did try. That said, there were several much worse performances than Rory's on Saturday, including Walters, Wilson, Woodgate, Shotton, Crouch and Etherington, but one should never let facts get in the way of a good scapegoat. Etherington covered Rory....I have never read so much shit in my life and that is saying something on here.

Delap's passing was shocking but that's nothing new but overall I didn't think he warranted the slating he's got. With Whelan I just never thought he was in the game as he can be. We were overrun in the middle though, that is an undeniable truth. Maybe the wind got to them?
