A banner for the away game along the lines of "Welcome To Hell?...Ever been to Port Vale?" would answer any Istanbul questions.

Neither is racism in some parts of the world That aside, no one has been offended enough to start anything down a legal route so its purely from the foundation of disliking it, rather than taking a proper stand against it. If you witness a rape or murder (or as it would be in this case, make an effort to watch it instead) and don't do anything at all to report it or see justice done but proceed to complain about it then its a pretty hollow sentiment. Well I wasn't in the South Stand to hear it, but if I had I would have reported it. We have a bad enough reputation as it is without a few more brain dead spackmongs adding to the poor side of our image. I think it's fucking disgraceful and it's about time the club did something to address this. It's not like it's the first time it has happened either. H GD shouldn't you be murdering some Polish people somewhere? No you weren't any where the South stand, you weren't anywhere near the ground.

Whatever stoke fans did to the Turks last night in any shape or form, it will be nothing to what they will dish out to us when we go there.
They wont let stoke fans walk round with flags n scarfs. Every one has to be very careful when they go to the return leg.
Istanbul is mental.

I spent most of the match last night embarrassed about the behaviour of our home support in the South stand. You'd think for someone who has a season ticket in block 19, that I'd be hardened to the behaviour of a certain element of our support ....but you'd be a million miles off. A fair percentage of the so called fans in the south stand hardly saw much of the game, but spent most of their time devoted to baiting the pretty impressive away support. From spotty chavs to middle aged portly men, with veins bulging out of their heads (yes you know who you are) furious at the away support for even daring to gesture back. One guy spent a lot of the game replicating the throat slitting gesture to anyone who dared to glance across the netting. Half time was no better with a fair few hundred people marching towards the fenced off smoking area to bait the away smokers, with a lovely rendition of; "I'd rather be a P*** than a Turk," to boot. Basically the South stand contained a fairly high percentage of chav's and knuckle draggers who seem intent on provoking a reaction from the away support. I wonder how they'd react if a few hundred crossed the flimsy netting ??? Because it will happen sometime, like it almost did against West Ham a couple of seasons ago. Note to self, give the South stand a miss in the future .....ahhhhh shit I've got two more matches to go PS I like giving the away support as much stick as the next man but some people wanted to go the extra mile and get angry for no good reason. Yep got to agree, it was embarassing to be sat there at times. The songs were pathetic at times. I also noticed that some of the fans were giving others grief for not joining in the singing - I know what you're all thinking why didn't you say something but it's easier said than done to be perfectly honest. You can guarantee if you say something thhen all the other little scrotes will get there back up and there is not a chance you can then actually sit and watch the game without getting abuse.

I heard some of the 'I'd rather be a P...' chants - very embarrassing especially as there are a number of asians in the crowd... (certainly a couple of sikh blokes sat near me last night.) Also what will our black (or non-white) players think if they hear any racist chants - would they lose respect / affinity with the crowd. Banter and swearing is one thing, but racist chanting is as RAF has said unacceptable and illegal. And also shows an embarrassing lack of class on the part of those singing.

I'm a season ticket holder in the South Stand and I was sat in their last night. I agree with your comment that a lot of the 'fans' in there spend 90 mins goading the opposition however you need to remember that half of the South Stand which was open last night, isn't usually available during Prem games, meaning that most of the wankers who were sitting next to the away fans were non season ticket holders. During Prem games I absolutely love the South stand, most of us spend the whole match standing up and it's brilliant having banter with the away fans (and I mean banter, not cut throat gestures or racist abuse). We sing non stop (often to drown the away fans out) and the vibe in there is generally brilliant. You do still get the odd sad fucker who offers the away fans on, but I'm sure you get that in any part of the ground. Spot on mate during the league games the South Stand is a sight to behold ! we are loud ! apart from cup / Europe when chavs take over and i`d rather be in any other part of the ground.

Honestly don't know why people get so wound up by football banter...... What is your definition of banter then??? I always make a point of meeting with our oppo, i remember cardiff last year with the chavs in the cup, i saw one cardiff family with kids who were shocked by the violence on the day at the powerleague, i had a lovely chat/banter with them. shame we are not all the same.
no need for it

I went in the South Stand for the first time ever on Thursday. I couldn't believe what I saw.
Grown blokes spewing out the most filthy of filthy racist chants and general "banter" for the entire 90 minutes. Most of them not even watching the match.
What's the bloody point?
