Some great memories being sparked here.
Been a while since I had a proper mooch round Hanley, but I've no idea what happened to some places I used to frequent as a yoof:
Chatfields/Chatwins(?) - music - Hope Street. Got my first bass from there + a really poor amp.
Route 66 - used to be Huntbach street I think - then moved to Hope Street, to a smaller place?
Kays'(?) - Music shop - half way down Hope Street and opposite - R&B Music.*
* I thought it was ace that Hanley had a kind of unofficial "Muso's Quarter".
Fantasy World - all kinds of stuff from there - T shirts, Music merchandise, books etc - became "Another World" and moved - still going?
Mike Lloyd's and Lotus Records - used to love going in Lotus and just talking music with the lads there (oh and buying records!). What was the record shop on the opposite corner to MLM? - Think it used to be the old WH Smith's.
Dale Sports - in the days before Sports Direct and JJB. Are Bourne Sports still going in Stoke?
Tandy - I know that's gone - was great for all kinds of electronic/audio knick-knacks.
Tungs - used to pick up some photo gear there when I was starting.

Not a shop, but anyone remember the Spifire Display on Bethesda Street, huge arch shaped glass construction, looked like a hanger I suppose..opposite the nick, I think the court is there now. The display itself is now in the museum Believe it or not the glass structure was in someones back garden at the top of primrose hill in Hanford until not long ago. My mums uncle Jack who lost both legs in WW2, manned the exhibition in bethesda street for many years. i was always more fascinated by his light blue 3 wheeled disabled car than the spitfire though

I know prostitution is illegal and brothels are not allowed but didn't there used to be one on the way out of Hanley towards Smallthorne, on a small ind est on the bend, can't remember it's name, as obviously I have never been, but I am told they made you very welcome, and the reddish/brown chesterfield settee in reception was especially comfortable and they did a superb Dilmah Tea for you while you were waiting, so I am told, cuz as previously stated I have never been, Mon to Fri 10.00am Till Midnight...Never been...Ever...But a friend has...

Hope Street used to be great late 70's...there was Chawners down the bottom where I got a Harrington Jacket and patchwork jumper from..to go with the platform boots and white bakers...and Zeros opened up there before moving to Newcastle. .I think they were prosecuted for selling Never Mind The Bollocks etc etc T-shirts.
I was at school then and there was no shopping centre or ring road and The Place was just round the corner in Bryant Street.
You could walk from the top of Hope Street down then up to the top of Waterloo Road and into no-go territory (as it was) Cobridge..The American. .what a dive that was !!

The Star was where I could be found, lying somewhere on the floor in the bogs usually =)
I seem to remember strippers at the Queens at the top end of Hanley circa 1980 always made for a good night out.
Heaths wine bar was the best place to get a bird pissed ever.
but the place I miss the most Is The Heavy Steam Machine , I was miles too young but always got in where I danced to this very dodgy guy.

My nan had a grocery shop on Lichfield Street for over 40 years. Opposite Cornwall's Chemist. Its now Meighs TV shop. Next door was The Coachmakers and the Shalamar Indian restaurant. Then a bit further up on the end of the row there used to be a cafe with a proper jukebox
Can anyone remember The Gault Shop (wooden toys) and Swinertons cycles opposite Bethesda church? Think Swinertons in Fenton now.
Hanley Bus station was a Mecca for all us chavy urchins, with Shipley's amusements, the bakehouse selling cheap slices of pizza, and fag vending machines. There used to be newsagent kiosk at the top end as well (or did I dream that?)

When I was in navy a ship was on was doing West Indies Guardship and playing many cricket matches against local West Indian Island teams. We were playing Turks and Caicos Islands and we had "lost our equipment" somewhere enrout to the game so had to borrow there's. To my amazement most of their stuff came from Bourne Sports in Stoke. Small world.

City centre models. Used to do all sorts although Scalextric was my thing back in the day.
They used to be in the arcade that was knocked down for TK Maxx and then moved to Picadilly I think.
Closed down a few years back.

I think it was. Don't remember it being round for long though. I assume Lotus records folded many years ago? Bloods was great downstairs for metal, but Lotus was my shop - every weekend, upstairs in Lotus then sit round in the arcade after. Those record stores were as much a social scene as a shop. Lotus is still a record store - different name now though, they sell tickets to local gigs (which is what Lloyds used to do), name escapes me though.

Iconic pub imo, friend of the family had it when it was Flickers, my best mate was head doorman and my sister worked behind the bar, it was great for free parking right in the town centre Had some great nights in there and some brilliant Xmas staff parties. Probably a storage place for documents or summat nowadays
