Wilko is a full blooded Stoke player through and through. He's an adequate right back at this level. His commitment, and occsaional rash play has sometimes cost us. He's played the occasional blinder for us. Being honest, we need to upgrade this position if we're to push on in our 4th season.
The problem is, I struggle to come up with a shortlist of viable / realistic options for this position. It seems like there's a general dearth of top class right backs in the Prem, and I'm not sure who could do the best job for us at the right price.
Any thoughts on any realistic candidates, or am I out of order to suggest we need to upgrade this position?

Habib baye from villa could be worth a punt too? Or fabio on loan from manure?

I recon we should go for tony hibbert myself tbh. Wouldnt cost too much and decent on the ball, quick and has the experience.

Don't know anything about Brayford, but we could do with a bit of pace out wide. Also, Beye wouldn't be a long term solution as he must be around 32 by now. I think that boat has passed. He might have been an option last season or the season before, but don't think he'd be the right option now.
I'd love to see Wilko progress and step up to the next level, but I think he'd have done it by now if he was going to do it at all.
Maybe we need to look outside of the Prem (abroad) for the solution?

He made one poor challenge today that got him a yellow and it was a challenge he had to make otherwise they were breaking on us. He also got beaten a few times but largely cope well. What we need is either back up or someone to challenge him for his place to push him further.

Wilkos decent and decent back up but lets face it, hes not good enough if we need to push on, we need two decent fullbacks in along with a ball playing midfield and we will have a quality side with a top squad.

scfcloyalist - Beye is now 33 and Hibbert is 29. Short term solutions at best. What about longer term? Might do some research on this Brayford character.

If we got someone with abit of experience though wilko might learn something from them and will only improve from the competition, theres tyrone mears too, i also rate zubar from the dingles whos another decent fullback.

Most of the names suggested so far, although potentially realistic, do not inspire me, and just shows how tough it might be to get the right player at the right price for this position.

I guess it depends what you've got in mind when you say ... 'the right price'. If it was my money, I would 'test the resolve' of both Citeh and Newcastle with individual bids of somet in the region of 7-8 million for each of Onuoha and Enrique for both of our full back spots. Or at least give Whitehead an extended run at right back, if we buy better than in him (and I think we need to) in the centre of the park.

the problem with fullbacks is that they are usually either a defender or a winger playing in defence rather than both which is what we really need in both LB and RB, which will then enable the team to use more adventerous midfield players as they will be given options.

Paul - I think you're heading into the territory I'm hoping we're going as a club, if we're looking to move to the next level.

On the assumption we could get these guys within the Stoke wage structure of course.

Wilkinson is good enough....Collins and Higginbotham aren't.
