We hit 260, which is well below par, as ever we got some starts but no one converted them to the big runs and that's what needs to happen. And I aren't blaming Swann and Broad, in fact in the past year their form with the bat has turned some ugly looking scorecards into respectable ones. The top order for me haven't got the will power for big runs. And if one of them does, the rest get out for bugger all. I know 260 is below par and yes, it would have been nice for someone to get a ton but they are not bottlers

I think they are because it always bloody seems to happen. But this time they didn't have Broady or Swann to form a partnership with and add an extra hundred to make it look respectable. As a unit they don't do it for me at all. Even against Pakistan they never looked great.

And if one of them does, the rest get out for bugger all. by all accounts it wasn't the best of innings, but we were OK at tea and were undone by the siddle hat-trick. That's just cricket really. I have plenty of confidence in Strauss making a few tons over the series. Trott's game is exactly what we need at 3, as he's all about just staying at the crease, we need him to have a good series in my opinion. Bell seems to have come good, colly will produce a great battling innings on a pretty regular basis. KP gets himself out a fair bit and cook does seem to have a problem getting to 100 from 50 but I guess that's just because his game is skewed towards leg side scoring, and we have plenty of runs down the order. A below par innings doesn't make us a bad batting side even though we do have a few of the classic English frailities.

I have confidence individuals will make tons but as a unit they hardly ever come together as one. Nevermind 500, when was the last time we got 400? I think we did manage it in the summer but not often enough. We do have strength in depth in that we can bat reasonably well down to 9 but 1-7 for me as a unit aren't good enough for making big runs consistently.
We managed 400 once against Pakistan. And that was down to two big tons from Trott and Broad, the rest of the top order hit 45 between them.
And we hit 500 against the bloody Bangladeshi's in the summer too, Trottski again with a big ton.

The bowling attack has got some serious work to do tomorrow, in order to reverse the under par display in the batting department

Last time we hit 500 was against Australia a last week, and before you say it does not count, it does in the eyes of the ICC.
Anyway, it was good bowling simple as that, the only batsman I have an issue with is Prior, it was a shocking shot in the first place and he should have been playing a forward defensive rather than trying to crash it through mid wicket.
The wickets fell as the cloud cover moved in, so hopefully with a bit of c,loud aournd this morning our boys can get stuck in, if you think our batting line up is poor, Australia's in my opinion is worse.

To me, the first day of play just typified English batsmen ie when You need a bit of fight, grit and determination, they get out. Australia's is probably worse, lets hope we can exploit that. As for Aussie A, fook that, I meant in a test! And the answer was Bangladesh, I'd fancy a 50 against them.

For me it was a classic case of batsmen wanting to impose themselves on the Aussie bowling from the off....no better example than Strauss goin for that ball when caution would have been a better option. Bat time not the scoreboard.
We should still be batting at lunch today.
Bet Australia won't make the same mistakes.
The weather may come to Englands aid and hope Anderson get something going and we dont shell the catches.
Broad needs to do the basics and keep it tight and hopefully we'll get some breaks.
Big day ahead.

It also means that when they are out there the ball will move about, that can only help our bowlers.

We definately do look a bit toothless. Anderson only seems to bowl well when the conditions suit the bowlers. Broad needs a bit of confidence. Finn too inexperienced.
