My first full season as a Stoke fan (what made me keep going back - despite it being a totally depressing time to be a Stoke fan I look back with fond (ish) memories. Seem to remember us having a fairly good start and a 5 or 6 match unbeaten run (lot of draws) before losing about 12 on the bounce. Best memory was obviously the Man Utd victory but best performance was definitely the win against Arsenal. Worst memory was standing on the Stretford End with my Man Utd supporting uncle and watching Barry Siddall put in one of the worst individual performances I've ever seen. Think I cried that afternoon. Worst performance was Luton at home - a 4-0 defeat in front of one man and his dog. Carl Beeston made his debut that year and abiding memory was a squad full of out of their depth youngsters such as Chris Hemming, Carl Saunders and Steve Parkin and past their best former heroes such as Alan Dodd, Alan Husdon and Sammy McIlroy. Certainly makes you grateful for the current situation - honestly thought that season we were a club on the brink of disappearing.

The stat 3,8,31 is etched in my memory for some strange reason and whats even more remarkable is we beat Man Utd,Arsenal and Sheff Wed.

In hindsight, it would have been better if we had gone down the season before. We stayed up by the skin of our teeth and all it did was delay the inevitable for twelve months. A cancer had set at the club by then which didnt leave for two decades.

Went to the Forest game and vividly remember Georgie Berry's goal. Was 1-1. We drew at Southampton 0-0 as well I'm sure my only ever visit to The Dell.

My first season too. Was too young to understand the predicament, but totally hooked by the Boothen End, Woodbines, farts and all.

This game was actually on ESPN classics (channel 429) a few months ago.

yeah i just googled our results from that season, fucking hell what a shocker.
A gate of 4597 for a home game against Norwich is pretty much hitting rock bottom.

My dads mate used to get me a free ticket for most games. As the season wore on he gave me 2 tickets, then 3 then 4. By the end of the season I could have as many tickets as I wanted. The thing is I couldn't even give the bloody things away.
I remember the ground being an empty hollow place. everyone expected us to get dicked every week, and we did. it was very depressing.

My last full season before coming to Cyprus, I went every home match, about seven away.
Two memories, did Dyson put the nut on Chapman who was playing Sheff Wed. at the time, plus Paul Painter hitting the bar from the penalty against Coventry. What would of sent them down with us.

Amazing (in their own way) days. I can well remember as a youngster standing in the Butler St Paddock for that Norwich game and staring accross at the near empty Boothen Paddock. Strangely that season never seemed to feel as bad as some of the subsequent ones in the depths of the lower leagues.

I was one of the 4597 at the Norwich game, stood in the paddock for a change, the Boothen looked shit, hardly anyone in there. Seem to remember a young Ruel Fox having a good game for them, or I might be getting a bit senile ????

I remember being the only stoke city fan in my shropshire primary school. Toughened me up the abuse i got that season from all the liverpool gloryhunters of the day. Didn't go too many games but i remember going a home game against the baggies where there couldn't have been more then 6k there.

I was still only a kid, but every Saturday I was glued to the radio listening to get some updates from the Stoke game! It was a hard season, but I'm still here feeling the same love for the team I've supported all my life without knowing why! Anyway the love for the club is real and it will be a part of me as long as I live.

Awful, that Forest game we took the lead and I missed it cos I was about 10 minutes late... Coventry with the missed penalty was pretty dire. However, it was character building and without all that pain I think our current pleasure would be lessened somehow.

I lost my shoe when (Parkin?) scored v Forest - was that 1.0 to Stoke or an equalizer?
Forest fans were later singing 'going down going down' Clough DID step out the dug out & waved at the Forest fans to stop - which they did.
no doubt Clough's friendship with Waddo over the years & a general sense of class were motivating factors
I know people look at wow we beat Arsenal - & seeing as my best mate was (& is) a gooner trust me I appreciated it - but Arsenal were very ordanary in the 80's.
17 points can prob work them out: Arsenal ,Weds & The Shit beaten (9 points) 2 draws v Leciester Forest away (went that one) Chelsea away (went that one too - easily in the top ever 10 mentals for Dysons goal) Southampton I dont recall
er who else dropped points against the worst (& I know Derby got less points but trust me they were miles better than Stoke 84-85) top flight side ever?

Looking back, 84 was the end of football. While we were away visiting the likes of brentford, football turned into entertainment and think most of us thought we would never get back to play in it Anyone remember Cloughie climbing out of the dug out and bollocking the Forest fans for taking this piss out of Stoke? As that demonstrates - was a very different game back then I only really remember the united win (and I went every home game), the rest are just a blur of long walks with me dad, back down the ginnel to the engineer works ... And then long drives home in silence, unable even summon enough joy to sing along with the Sports Report tune I can honestly say I hated all but about 180 minutes of it ... Me dad didn't go again until we beat villa, 23 years later ah
