Which is great if it wasn't in a week where two localish (to the teams they were sold from) lads have just been sold for the best part £40 million! Of course it's about producing local lads, there's an article on the second previous page showing Boro's new intake. From memory they're mainly from the North-East.
We don't produce first team players either but that's a different matter entirely and one I can't see changing until TP leaves.

So according to Mark on Twatter, TP has appointed his mate Sam Ellis as academy manager/director. I despair.

This is a very depressing thread and a total seemingly blind spot to the management, which is crazy if we are to become a self sufficient club as we will never get 35,000 plus at 1st team games

If only we could get back to the days when we produced local talent like Andy Griffin (born in Wigan), Clive Clarke and James O'Conner (Ireland), Kris Commons (Mansfield) and Lewis Neal (Leicester). Football's changed and we need to change with it. Not since The Shit brought through the Nevilles, Beckham etc have acadamies been about producing local talent - it's about producing the most first-team players (wherever they come from). I Think Beckham is from london?

Or is he just the successor to the used car salesman from Portsmouth? If this is true, this seems a ridiculously backward step. Ellis is regarded as a bit of an old-school caveman, isn't he? Just the type you want to keep well away from the Academy.

Pennock will now be the U18's coach apparently.
What a circus.

Not a clue Grapey, Mark is the best man to field that I reckon.
He is Grapey, he's been here before as well, when was that? I called him a dinosaur in my post then deleted because I couldn't be arsed to argue about it but yeah a caveman/dinosaur is what he is.

Whats the use in having an academy when obviously TP thinks he can give the job to one of the boys. Also why have the club kept it quiet? Serious questions need to be answered about all of this.

It does seem a pointless and expensive exercise. When will it piss Coates off? Will it piss Coates off? Who knows!? But it is a farce.

So according to Mark on Twatter, TP has appointed his mate Sam Ellis as academy manager/director. I despair. Someone's got the wrong end of the stick here I'm afraid. Sam Ellis was in the position of Academy Manager for about a month or so a few years back. A job between jobs situation. Adie Pennock has been u18s coach from the day he arrived. Since Pulis arrived there has only been one serious appointment as Academy Manager in Steve Holland who was brought in on merit. The rest were jobs for the boys appointments. Unfortunately Holland only took the job because he was fed up with hoovering up at home. As soon as a proper job came up he was off. The situation with the academy is well understood at other clubs.

He fits the bill of being a big mother fooker though! I think he'd miss it by a month or be a third year scholar. That's basing it on the birth dates of the player's according to the official sites profiles and how school's work and presuming it's the same here.

So if he's coaching the U-18s, where does that leave Pennock?
Or could Kevan himself be the Steve Martin replacement?

If Dave Kevan has been appointed Academy Director it is great news. I worked in the Academy from its slow beginning as a scout and under Keith Leighton and Noel Blake it really started to take off. During that time Dave Kevan was the nicest bloke you could ever wish to meet and really was a good coach. Unfortunately it has had a succession of blokes who really have not had the club at heart. Dave has remained local all this time and I am sure he will do a great job for us in resurrecting the academy's status.

Concur with Silver Dollar.
Kevan has a really good record in youth development. Did a great job at Forest who have one of the most successful academies around.
Brings to the academy the ability to improve players individually. That is something very lacking at present.
Top appointment in my view but would like to understand which role he actually has.

Good stuff, looking forward to seeing these lads play.
I hate the term "look how far we've come" but "only costing an initial fee of 300k" for a youth player shows it!

£300,000 for a 16-year-old keeper?
Is that par for Premier League Academies?
Have we spent that kind of fee for any other youngsters since we've been in the Prem? Does it show that we are starting to take things seriously?
Then again, that Immanuel Parry bloke seems (and this may be unfair on him) to be out of the bargain bucket.
So hard to know what to make of our Academy scouting set-up?

The lad wants to play in England, agent will have fixd up trials and has been around more than just us. Id say it was expensive but then again the Pogba's etc at Man u cost seven figures. Good prospect though from what I have seen.

Whats with the hoovering up of foreign 'talent'?
Is it a sneaky way of getting technically better players brought up through the botched "home grown" ruling? A sign of a poor local scouting netowrk, poor coaching at Academy level or a mixture of the lot?

I'd go for c) mixture of the lot.

Sentinel says Pennock is moving to first-team coaching duties, Kevan is becoming U-18 manager, and that ex-Sheff Utd director, Terry Robinson, is becoming Academy Director.
