Why moan about Delap when Whelan was absolutely garbage today? Some of his passing was laughable, especially in his own defensive areas. While we,re on about laughable passing ,how poor was Ethers today?? Think today is one of those games to put a line under and forget!! ???

Agree entirely
Whelan is poor at best. Delap is our best midfielder barr none. Ethers massively over rated.

Whelan is very overrated and today emphasised that. Pulis needs to take some blame with him though today- he wasn't fit and shouldn't have been anywhere near the pitch.

Agree entirely Whelan is poor at best. Delap is our best midfielder barr none. Ethers massively over rated. I wasn't at the game today and have seen nothing but the result BUT Ethers is quality IMO may have had a bad game today but that happens. Its been clear that mf has been our weakest area for ages but a mf contaning Ethers is the future for me. Harry

He did have a poor game today and it surprised me he was playing because i thought he was out injured. He has been struggling from a calf injury he probably only featured out of necessity because there was no one else to play that position he was probably still carrying it a little, he is IMO one of our best players. Etherington is also a key man and a top player, Delap is a good player and he fits the bill for our squad but he is a bit old and slow and not as good as Whelan or Ethers.

I seem to remeber Whelan had a spell a year or two ago where he couldn't get off the bench. Now we can't get him on it. Come on Tone get someone in that can pass a football. You can have messi and Rooney up front but if you don't feed them they score under 10 goals a season.

One option for the midfield is to put Faye in there. He has played there as a DM and we can slot wilko at RB, he always done a solid job, and then move Huth at CB. Simples.

If Whelan wasn't 100% fit today, what's the excuse for his last couple of seasons?

Faye, Whelan, Delap are good SQUAD players to use every now and again! We need pace, creativity to move forward!

Delap's come in for a lot of criticism tonight when he was much better than Whelan. Delap put a big shift in and doesn't desrve all this flack.

This is my worry burton. No, some players don't deserve stick, but if playing players out of position or some even at all carries on, then i fear some fans will start to boo them out of frustration which i don't really want to happen to them.
If this happens Tone really has to share the blame for it.

I agree. Whelan was just as poor as Delap today. I think that the same could be said for Whitehead as well whose tackling was a little reckless at times and did very little in possession. It is clear we need some more creative midfield players.
I disagree about Ethers being overrated though. He is comfortably our best midfield player.

Ethers had about 7 or 8 good games last year. Thats about a fifth of the season. The rest of the time he was woeful. Cannot beat a man for toffee. Looks unfit and short of pace and ideas. What annoys me most is that people will slate mama all day on the terraces but when price whelan or ehters give the ball away (plenty of times today) no one says anything, but with mama its boo boo boo all day. Fickle Stoke very fickle indeed.

correct jen. Just writing my bit for next weeks Oatcake and focussing on Whelan and the midfield.
Tonge has been our best midfielder pre-season and Pugh never lets us down. Are they good enough? Well, we will never know as it seems Whelan is first name down for many games.
Glenn has had many many chances to impress. He hasn't.
Last April I asked a few Whelan lovers on here to name me 5 games he has bossed since he's been here - including the Championship. I had lots of abuse but I never ever got a list of 3 games, never mind 5.
Wolves midfield dominated today, yet our international midfield 'star' saw a game pass him by AGAIN.
Glenn Whelan is nowhere near good enough. Even a MOTM v Spurs wouldn't change my opinion of him. Emporers new clothes is Glenn. Folk rate him yet can't ever tell us why.

I remember Dave saying the other night that 'some of the management team' think we should have a play maker in there.
I'm guessing there that Tone is happy with a Deano, Whelan, Kovac type of player, where as PC or others would like to have someone who can actually pass a football and excite the crowd and in the long term improve attendances.

ABB,
Fans will have their favourites the same as managers and coaches will have. I work away from stoke so only saw half a dozen games at the brit last season plus when they were on telly. Ethers looked good but maybe that was only in the games I saw. I don't think Mama deserves the criticism he gets, I just feel if we are going to move forward then that is an area we need to improve (TP clealy agrees). I'd never slag him, he's been a star and a great servant but IMO just not good enough now, he's not alone and as a team we need to keep moving forward.

Admit if you are one of the supporters today that sang 'Whelan, Whelan' when he ran to take a corner second half.
He's someone that does bugger all throughout the game and always gets his name sung when taking a corner!! Unbelievable.
We use to call Whelan 'crab' for always passing sideways. What do you call someone that doesn't pass sideways but backwards!

I agree entirely. Mama is not good enough we all know that, but Delap is still our best midfielder by a country mile. He reads the game so much better that the others. I would honestly pick Pugh ahead of Prince Whelan.
