That is a quality signing!
Maybe Leon Cort will have a LONG rest?
Chris for England
Jun 11 2005 Philip Tallentire And Barry King, Evening Gazette
Chris Riggott can emulate Gareth Southgate to skipper Boro and play for England, predicts Steve McClaren.
The classy defender has a bright future ahead of him according the Boro boss, who paid Derby County £2m for his services two-and-a-half years ago.
Riggott's season was interrupted by injuries, but that didn't stop him from winning over his manager with a series of assured displays alongside Southgate.
In fact, McClaren announced mid-way through the campaign that the 24-year-old had played so well when deputising for Ugo Ehiogu that he would retain his place when the former Aston Villa defender recovered from injury.
Sure enough, Riggott missed just one league fixture before a hamstring injury ruled him out of the home game against Manchester City in December.
"Chris was excellent for us last season and forged an outstanding partnership with the skipper," said McClaren.
"He came into the team because of injuries but did enough to make the shirt his own.
"He was unlucky with injuries himself and missed most of the run in but he can be a huge player for us in the future."
Asked if Riggott had leadership potential McClaren answered: "I don't see why not, he's that type of player. Even when he was at Derby he was seen as a future England player and he represented the Under-21s.
"If he can keep developing at the same rate he's got every chance of progressing."
Riggott agrees a new 4-year contract
Defensive king-pin Chris Riggott has put pen to paper on a new four-year contract.
The news of the signing is a massive boost for manager Gareth Southgate, who sees his former partner in the centre of defence as not only a key element of his re-vamped Boro side but as a future England international.
"Chris has progressed particularly well over the last three years and was a big part of our European success last season," said the gaffer. "Now we are looking at him to force his way into the international set-up."
After a long struggle, Riggott finally established himself in the Boro starting XI last season and was unlucky not to win England recognition.
But, at 25, time is on his side and with former boss Steve McClaren taking charge of the national team at the end of this month, he may yet win a call-up for the friendly against Greece, at Old Trafford, on August 16.
Riggott has always expressed his desire to commit his long-term future to Boro and signing the deal now means the club should benefit from his peak years as a professional.
He wore the captain's armband on several occasions last season and was touted as a potential replacement for Southgate as skipper before George Boateng got the nod, but he'll certainly be seen as Boro's senior defender.
The former England Under-21 centre-back capped an outstanding campaign by being named Players' Player of the Season.
Riggott joined Boro from home-town club Derby in January 2003 in a joint £3m deal with striker Malcolm Christie.

On the verge of the England squad not too long back either - very good signing.
I think we need to look at the last 11 games as the last 3rd of a game and whilst Cort has scored the goals to get us in front, we now need to bring in a more 'capable' vocal centre back to protect our position

Chris immediately became popular among the fans, scoring twice on his second appearance in the Tees-Wear derby against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, which Boro won 3-1. He was part of the 2004 League Cup final squad but did not play in the final. In the 2004-05 season he made 32 appearances, mostly covering for the much injured Ugo Ehiogu, contributing to the team's most successful season since the Premier League was established.
In the 2005/2006 season Riggott became the first choice central defensive partner for Gareth Southgate, in a successful season which saw the club reach the UEFA Cup final he stood out and was generally regarded as being one of the outstanding players for Middlesbrough during the season.

Riggott's A Red Posted on: Fri 29 Feb 2008 Stoke City Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of Middlesbrough defender Chris Riggott on loan until the end of the season, subject to Football League and Football Association approval.
The 27-year old has Premier League experience in abundance after playing over 150 games for both Boro and Derby County.
Chris came through the ranks with his home town club Derby where he went on to make 91 appearances, bagging himself five goals.
He was also named as the clubs player of the year for the 2000/01 campaign.
Article continues Advertisement His form for the Rams saw a host of side's chasing his signature, including Liverpool.
However he eventually opted for a switch to Middlesbrough in 2001, with former England boss Steve McClaren splashing out £3,000,000 for his services.
The powerful centre back immediately endeared himself to the fans by bagging a brace against Tyne-Side rivals Sunderland as they went on to win 3-1.
He was also a part of the 2004 League Cup Final squad, however failed to feature in the match.
During the 2004/05 season he made 32 starts for the club forming a solid partnership with current boss Gareth Southgate.
His best year for the club came the following season, as he played a key role in Boro's surge to the UEFA Cup Final. He was regarded as one of the clubs best performers that season.
New manager Southgate strengthened his back line up last year with the arrivals of Robert Huth (Chelsea) and Jonathan Woodgate (Real Madrid) and since then Chris has found it difficult to break his way in to the first team fold.
A rumoured move to Derby last summer failed to materialise, and now he will look to help the Potters in our quest to reach the Premier League.
Chris will be handed the number 32 shirt.

Looks like one down and one to go...
4PM UPDATE: NASH NOT THE END OF PULIS LOAN QUEST Be the first reader to comment on this story
TONY Pulis still wants another two loan signings to add to goalkeeper Carlo Nash.
Nash's three-month loan move from Wigan was being signed and sealed this afternoon in readiness for him to join the squad for Sunday's televised clash at QPR.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper came through his first training session with his new colleagues this morning ahead of a likely place on the bench at Loftus Road.
But Pulis doesn't want to stop there as he seeks cover at the back and up front for the likes of Ricardo Fuller pending his likely two-match ban in the near future.
He has already been bombarding chairman Peter Coates with the message, stating today:
"I still think we need two more players and I think Peter has got that recorded"
Leon Cort was continuing to make steady progress today in his attempt to recover from the badly-bruised ankle he suffered at Preston on Tuesday evening.
He missed training again, but Pulis said:
"The pleasing thing is that he's got an outside chance of being fit for Sunday. When it first happened we were thinking it could be broken and he'd be out for weeks"
Andy Wilkinson stands by for Cort after deputising for his colleague in the second half at Preston.
