It’s not where she started though, is it? “ Rayner was born Angela Bowen on the Bridgehall estate, Stockport, in March 1980, the second of three children. Her mother Lynn was one of 12 kids born to out-of-work parents. Lynn had never been to school. “I followed the fair,” was how she described her upbringing to her daughter. Beyond the fact that her mum was from Wythenshawe (“like Marcus Rashford”) and her dad from Stockport, Rayner has “no idea” of her family’s background. “I don’t want to go on Who Do You Think You Are? I dread to think who I am! I just think: I know what I know.” It’s worth noting that former Tory chancellor Sajid Javid’s mother was also illiterate, but regularly marched young Sajid to the local library to study. Lynn, by contrast, was in spirals of suicidal despair. For long periods she was unable to get out of bed. Rayner became her carer: feeding her, washing her, once even sleeping at the end of her bed, “in case she did something”. Their house was a tip. The children were covered in dog fur, tidemarks of dirt visible on their skin. Food was sausage with chips; chips with chips. On Sundays they traipsed two miles to their nan’s high-rise for a hot bath and to have uniforms washed in her twin tub. “We used to play on the old disused railway lines aged five, and that was eight streets away from where I lived. I’d be nervous about my 14-year-old going eight streets away, let alone a five-year-old.” Their father was largely “out” – sometimes overnight, sometimes having “walked out” – his mood unpredictable on his return. Rayner remembers the slam of the front door and mimes a frightened gasp, zipping her mouth in fear. “As a child, little things are big. Your dad’s come home and he’s angry. How do you not breathe so they don’t see you hiding?” She doesn’t analyse her parents’ relationship: “That’s for them.” But watching her mother’s collapse each time her dad left made her feel “a byproduct of their relationship. We weren’t, like, wanted. I don’t really feel like I’ve ever been loved, or needed love, because I’ve never had it, in that way.” “ amp.theguardian.com/global/2024/mar/23/angela-rayner-roots-rough-edges-ready-for-powerShe’s come from a rough upbringing, left school at 16 when pregnant and had to rebuild her life thereafter. There really are not a lot of politicians who make it far that didn’t get much handed to them, but she is one of them. But currently middle class nonetheless. Or are you permanently one or the other? Being someone who was brought up in a working class household in Longton (6 generations of coal miners) and then graduated into University working environments I feel that my working class roots have never left me, and moreso I am consistently reminded of them when surrounded by people who have obviously been brought up in more privileged settings. You are made conscious of it all of the time in meetings and dialogues. The way I speak, the way I engage with others, the way others engage with me, my motivations and interests etc. I still find I more comfortably communicate with others who have been brought up in similar low socio-economic backgrounds (rare though though they are in these settings). edit: I always find myself chatting to the office staff rather than fellow academics at staff gatherings for example. They are the only ones interested in football for a start! I think working class roots are difficult to shake off even if you try your hardest (not that I do) but I definitely have been guilty of trying to hide them and feeling intimidated in certain situations. I'm not sure whether its just a personal thing or not.

Maresca to Chelsea on a 5 year deal apparently. Basket case club doing basket case things. Fancy swapping Poch for this guy especially after it looked like he'd finally got them gelling. The word at Chelsea is that Poch wanted out from half way through the season and made that clear to the owners. But yes, he had got them in great form which will be hard for a new boss to replicate.

Maresca to Chelsea on a 5 year deal apparently. This seems a very strange appointment for a club the size of Chelsea. His only managerial experience before Leicester was Parma in Serie B where he failed to get them promoted and was sacked. Massive jump from 1 decent season in the Championship managing a team who were expected to get promotion, and they nearly screwed it up too. It was as much a case of Leeds and Soton screwing up than them striding towards victory. Am I missing something here?

£24 today My first season ticket in the paddock was £60 . Mick Mills era Is that £24 for the seats? How much to stand? So £1 in 1974 is £15 today so for juveniles in the Boothen it would be £3 today £6 for adults (Boothen) £16.50 for Stands

Couldn't believe how poor Leeds have been. Rabbits in headlights.
They didn't even look like they were that interested tbh. I suppose Play Off finals at Wembley can do that to a team.
Can't work out whether it is encouraging or depressing.

Agreed he has been a mainstay part of a midfield that has resembled a laughing stock most of the season that has been so easy to play against. A lot to prove before he is considered a starter for England. Don’t get me wrong he’s got a great future if he stays grounded but our midfield is set. I think he’ll get on the pitch at some point during the tournament mind I just think he's got the composure and the temperament that will be successful in international football, like Bellingham. You get players who are great in the league, who can't always translate it in internationals and big games. I just feel he is one of those. Just my opinion.

Mainoo is unreal. him, Bellingham, Rice, Foden for England is probably the best midfield/attack in the world for the next decade. Mainoo has got to play.

Foden, de Bruyne and haaland were wank today. Foden is a worry for England, very poor indeed. Don't think you can judge a player on one anonymous performance, I think he's a fabulous PL player. I would personally pick Bellingham over him any day of the week in a big game in their preferred positions tbh. Just got to find a role for them both.

Man City were as bad as I’ve seen them in years. Leggy, sloppy in possession, disjointed at the back. Man Utd won that so comfortably….. Some of their players are all over the PL but seem to disappear in big Cup games. Walker and Doku were the only two who turned up today.

Not read the whole thread But read the same bollocks every year about the cup final not being the same. Pick up a couple of disposable bbqs, crack open a frosty one and enjoy the match Not bollocks what some have said and also true that this year it's gained some of its identity back with the 3pm time and designated day Feels like a real Cup final day again Agreed. The FA Cup has suffered in recent seasons and been undermined by PL priorities, but agree with this, I think football has realised that it the best club competition in the world and it definitely regained some of its mojo this year. 3pm kick off is such a big part of the tradition and resonates with fans.

This is going to be huge upset if Man Utd win, which is quite a strange phenomenon in itself.
It feels like they have done well to get through the first 10 minutes without conceding.

Southgate is going to be praying that Walker and Stones get through this game unscathed, being the only 2 decent defenders we have in the squad.

Should have booked Haaland for diving and screaming at the ref.

The Sunday papers are all full of the news that Stoke are poised to bring back Mike Bernard from Everton for a fee in excess of £140,000. This seems a strange move as Josh has settled readily to the defensive midfield position and shifting him back to wide midfield to accommodate Bernard seems a touch extravagant especially as it is our goal threat that is holding us back. Director Percy Axon has made a speech in which he is bemoaning the expenses that the club are currently carrying. A new social club is costing £45,000 and improvements to the Butler Street Stand £65,000. Now the club (alongside all 1st and 2nd Division clubs) have to build a moat to stop fans invading the pitch. This is costing £100,000 and the club have asked for extra time as August is an impossible deadline. However, Ted Croker, FA Secretary, has warned that clubs who had crowd trouble in the past 12 months would find themselves severely dealt with by the disciplinary committee if they do not comply on time. Axon wanted the deadline to be 2 or 3 years and not a matter of months. We, of course, are a club who had crowd trouble thanks to the Man Utd fans visit. In 4 days time, Stoke will be eagerly watching the Feyenoord vs Spurs UEFA Cup Final, hoping that Spurs lose and Stoke can apply for a place in next season's UEFA competition. Seems bizarre now that the UEFA Cup Final was over 2 Legs Home and Away!

Never stood a chance in ours did we. There was just a shitty anticlimactic feeling about the whole thing, epitomised by 1) it being the first time the cup final clashed with Premier League games, meaning most people were more interested in that, and 2) our supersub being Danny Pugh. Everyone hated us, no-one cared about the final cos they were watching the Prem and Man City winning was a formality, which they duly fulfilled in the background. Oh well. Might get to another in a hundred years or somat Absolutely spot on, the PL games on the same day seemed to completely undermine the event. Thankfully they have binned that idea but no compensation for us. I think the problem now is that the FA Cup seems to further underline the increasing gap between the big clubs and the rest, or is that Man City and the rest? Coventry very nearly made it though!

They're religious maniacs and are absolutely no different to Islamist fanatics. In the middle of the 21st century, how on earth is the West allowing a nations borders to be determined by fundamentalist dogma? That's really quite scary and cultish. It's so tragic that we ended up with 2 nations, side by side, each run by fundamentalists both obsessed with obliterating the other with violence and terror, but the fact that the USA (and to a great extent the UK) chooses to jump on that particular bandwagon is gobsmacking and utterly depressing. On one level these politicians seem to have no real awareness of what they are actually supporting here and the implications of it. Thank goodness there is some sanity in the Governments of Norway, Spain and Ireland. A saving grace at the moment.

There were also 'Gypo' comments aimed towards towards Doddy, who seemed to get stick because he seemed quite chilled and probably because his hair was a bit long. Actually he was a very composed footballer who knew how to make time and space for himself on the ball. . View AttachmentWas and still is very chilled with his architecture and his Old Grey Whistle Test. A strict vegan these days though according to Wiki so no more cheese salads. He was such a fine player.....Real Class!

I remember a time when Jimmy Greenhoff used to get a bit of stick at games. Dobing, Eastham the same. But I'd completely forgotten the slow hand clapping phase when games weren't going well. Vernon, Herd, Dodd, Moores, Elder. The list goes on and on. I remember Moores getting stick, seemed to be basically because he wasn't John Ritchie ironically. But I still remember comments on the Boothen End about Moores that he 'can't run properly and looks like a Gypo' Certain things stick in your mind. There were also 'Gypo' comments aimed towards towards Doddy, who seemed to get stick because he seemed quite chilled and probably because his hair was a bit long. Actually he was a very composed footballer who knew how to make time and space for himself on the ball. We certainly have history! We drew the next 2 home home games 0-0 then beat Leeds 3-0 and Arsenal 5-0 so that might have hushed the moaners for a while. That season we didn't concede a single goal in the first 6 home games and were unbeaten at home until February 20th. We were just bloody awful away from home.

Something makes me feel very uneasy about this. When I have read up on the details of this conviction I just couldn't help thing...what if? Of course I have no idea if she is guilty or not, and I offer no judgement, but there seemed to be more questions than answers, many of which didn't seem to get fully addressed.

Risking his career when he is already overpaid anyway.
