He's fairly easy to find if you own the Tony Matthews Stoke City encyclopaedia. He's listed as an amateur who played for also played for Glossop and Créwe. Born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1886, played left wing, originally signed from Hanley Swifts but was later transfered to Huddersfield Town. His Stoke debut was September 1908, his last game was April 1910. Played 78 times and scored 25 goals while with us.

In the A-Z of Stoke City it says he was born in Hartshill in 1887! The author is none other than Tony Matthews!

I'm going from the first addition of the book (1868-1994) Maybe the family got in touch with Tony and he corrected it at a later date when he bought out the new book? Looking at them both and they are different. There's also a Doug Millward but he played in 1888. Maybe a great great grandfather too?!

BEB, I wonder if they would have approved of sectarian songs being sung while they played! I very much doubt it!!

John Malkin born Longton 9 November 1925. Scored 27 goals in 190 games.
vied with Matthews for the number 7 shirt but took over when Matthews went to Blackpool. Started playing when in the Army before signing for Stoke aged 18.
Knee ligament injury at Leicester in 1956 forced retirement. Died SOT 19 May 1994.
I must have seen him play once or twice but can't remember him I am afraid - others on this board will.

ROFLMFAO
RAF in "quiet tarts moaning about swearing and songs their virgin ears dont like." shocker.
This about the bloke who single handedly started the 12 pints of Bass song 4 times at watford away.
Having met RAF, I can confirm to BEB he's not a "quiet tart & doesn't have virgin ears" ... he'll be at millwall if you want to meet him, hes a nice fella really

I dont mind meeting him, Im sure i will like him too, but i aint changing what i am because of what someones said. And i didnt call him a tart, I worded it wrong, But i think you get what i ment. If he wants to meet me thats fine. Ill be at the milwall game with Smeegs. ( Yes us two hooligans together, singing anti IRA songs ) When i sing that song, I sing it thinkinh that the IRA hate English and the queen, So why not sing things about them. I didnt realise that it gets much deeper for the actuall Irish people, But that wont stop me from singing it, But atleast i understand what it means.

yes lets sing John lennon "let it be"
mind you it wouldn't beat a great version of "We are the champions" sung in 1993 ... the boothen end choir were almost harmonious that night, brought a tear to my eye

There was so much more to Johnny Malkin than the bare statistics in one of the above posts. A hell of a player, right winger, fast with a tremendous shot who gave everything to Stoke City and the clubs fans. After his career was ended by injury he spent many years working for the Post Office at Leek Road Sorting Office where I was privileged to work with hime for many years. A lovely man, quiet and very modest but had a wicked sense of humour. RIP JOHNNY
