I'm sure it's a worrying time for Gazza and his family but having worked in Mental Health for 26 years and seen many many people detained under the Mental Health Act over the years it could well be just what he needs at this time !
Good Luck to him anyway

Gazza Arrested Under Mental Health Act
Updated:13:27, Thursday February 21, 2008 Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been arrested under the Mental Health Act. Paul Gascoigne Paul Gascoigne
The former Newcastle, Spurs and Lazio midfielder was arrested at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead last night and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.
His family has told Sky sources that the former footballer called police himself and that the incident is "a cry for help".
Sky correspondent Gerard Tubb said his family said the incident was "nothing to be particularly concerned about - it was a cry for help, effectively Paul Gascoigne turning himself in".
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel.
"The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no one was injured during the incident." Advertisement
The Mental Health Act is used when a person is considered to be a danger to themselves or to others.
People arrested under the act can be held for a maximum of 72 hours, usually at a hospital but sometimes at a police station.
A hotel spokesman said Gascoigne had been staying at the hotel for one night and said no damage had been caused.
Gascoigne has had a troubled history of emotional instability and erratic behaviour.
He was famously dubbed "daft as a brush" by then-England manager Bobby Robson at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.
Sky News sports presenter Jon Desborough said the arrest was the latest example of "the demons he has had to deal with throughout his life". Gazza at the Italy World Cup in 1990 Gazza at the Italy World Cup in 1990
He said: "That madcap approach he had in football never managed to make it over to his real life."
Gazza shot to international fame through his performances at Italia 90, famously bursting into tears on the pitch after his booking meant he would not be able to play in the final should England get there.
He played a key role in getting England to the semi-finals of Euro 96, scoring a sensational goal against Scotland in the group stage.
However, Glenn Hoddle left him out of the squad for the 1998 World Cup in France, sparking a tantrum from the player.
Gascoigne had spells at Rangers, Middlesbrough, Everton and Burnley before going abroad, playing briefly for Gansu in China and Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates.
A surprise move into management with Kettering was short-lived.

Unfortunately, his short-lived spell at Kettering wasn't unexpected!

Apparently, he was in a prison for the mentally unstable before, he was assigned garden duties. Anyway a few years later a new warden arrived and drove his car up through the prison grounds. Admiring the beauitful grounds, well tended flower beds etc. The new warden noticed a man over in the corner doing some weeding. he stopped his car and walked over, excuse me said the warden, who is responsible for these magnifcent grounds ? I am replied gazza. How long have you been in here, asked the warden, years, replied Gazza. Well said the warden, there cant be much wrong with anyone who can create such beauty, Im going to see about your release. the warden turned around, and just as he was about to get inside his car he was hit on the back of the head with a house brick, falling to the floor with blood pouring from his head he turned round to gazza who shouted, YOU WONT FORGET WILL YOU MATE !!!

I read his book, a couple of years ago. Obviously it wasn't written solely by him otherwise it would have read something like... "Helo my naym is gazza. Fuk of Norway "It was a seriously good read, which is unusual for a footballer's autobiography, as they're usually as boring as a dog's arse. "We played Man Utd and won 1-0. I scored a goal. Then we played Everton and won 2-1. i scored twice and we won the league. It was dead good etc etc." This had a bit more meat on the bones though, and went some way to at least scratching the surface of Gazza's rather interesting psyche. Despite him behaving like a complete cunt at times (beating his wife up etc), you do end up feeling sorry for him, basically because he's just a child trapped in an adult's body (but you don't need me or the book to tell you that!) Hope he can find some way of coming to terms with himself...I'm not all that hopeful though.
