Owdo duckies Just having a chat with a young en in the paper shop who happens to be from poland, he has not been to a football game yet after being in the UK for 2 years. Do you think the club should print a few adverts in other languages in the sentinel explaining that theyre welcome to come and watch the football. It has always been good to have the icelandic interest but as our community develops surely the club want a piece of this market, it makes sense and it will also get the younger ones growing up to support Stoke. The more the merrier I say, Thoughts?

They'd want the Government to pay for their ticket though.
Hat on.
Good idea though.

After the Scunny match, me and my old man went to the burger van just outside the away stand for a cup of tea. Two Estonians there buying a burger (with onions) who had been to the game and seemed to have enjoyed it.
For the most part most immigrant labour is only here to make enough cash to send back home to pay off university debts, rents etc. so I wouldn't expect there to be a massive market of potential Stokies. Just got to make sure they're welcome if they do go.

Sorry Betty, but I just don't get it. If you were talking to a 'young en' from Poland whose been here for two years, why should we want adverts in other languages? Presumably you weren't talking to him in Polish? And what other languages would you suggest - maybe Serbo Croat and Afrikaans. Nah, it's a non-starter for me I'm afraid.
Anyway, I thought that the government are insisting that all immigrants speak English before they arrive, so what would be the point?
Don't all the local Poles support Leek Town anyway?

He is a pupil at a local school and speaks good English however i know of many that dont. Why not get some adverts up and running and get people down to watch the football and be supporters of Stoke City. We dont just have people from Stoke on trent in our city anymore we must adapt to involve all. This not only getting those that are outsiders involved but this could spread further a field to links with teams in other countries which is invaluable for scouting etc etc

Iceland, it's because during the last war a lot of Poles came to England to work down the mines and as North Staffs was one of the biggest coal mining areas in the country they came here. As most immigrants tend to do they lived in close proximity to each other (for obvious reasons) and that area around these parts tended to be Leek. It's natural to think that if a immigrant community congregate together in a small town, they are more than likely to support the local football team.
.... but that's why I added a question mark in the original post, because who can say for certain.

This is my first post since the old Oatcake, but some of the ill thought out posts riled me enough to respond. My Grandad was born in Lodz in Poland, most of his family were executed by the Germans and many died in the hands of the Russians. At the age of 16 he fought shoulder to shoulder with British troops during the second World War, a few years later, after a near fatal wounding (5 years in various hospitals) he settled in Blackshaw Moor (Nr Leek). After passing away last year I worked out that he’d supported Stoke for over 50 years, his love for Stoke City came after, only his family. He’d talk with me for hours about Stoke, he was lucky enough to witness all of the greats that graced the Victoria Ground. He talked about Stanley Matthews as if they were friends, but he did share 45mins on a pitch with him, in a Poland v England army friendly during the war. He’d be a very proud man right now, to see us at the top of the league, and I’ll never forget the odd tear that crept out when we gained promotion in Cardiff. I know quite a few (near) lifelong Stoke fans from Poland, after thousands settled in the surrounding areas after the war, the red and white of the Polish flag measured well with City’s stripes and many new fans were born. The loyalty, passion and pride of supporting our club transcends nationality and religion etc. Let’s not be so naive in thinking that only people born in Stoke are allowed to support them.
