...And She Laughed No More by Stephen FosterWinger graciously got the publishers to send me a pre-release copy so that I could review it for the fine folk of the oatcake message board. Its very much in the style of "She stood there laughing" and none the worse for that, it starts off in the dying embers off our promotion season, with our intrepid author and some fellow Stokies listening to the commentary from Colchester via radio stoke, on a laptop whilst drinking rather large quantities of Belgium Beer ;D. Along the way we learn all about the characters that accompany (or not) winger to games across the season, some are names regular MB readers will know, some are people from his other books who crop up from time to time, and then there is his son, who is now grown up, and has an interesting career that will certainly make a few of the younger readers do a double take, I certainly had a "did I honestly read that right" moment !!!!! Its the personal insights that make this book, we all know how the story ends, and even the final chapter is in this one , but its reading someone put in print how many of us feel about football that makes it such a worthwhile read. I found my moods fluctuating as I read about each game, happy for a win, sad for a loss, depressed for a thumping, and I don't think you can ask more than that from a book about a season you saw a large proportion of with your own eyes. There are plenty of laughs along the way, and even a moment that brought a tear to my eye

So where's the review then? what do you want, an outline of whats in the book ? Or for me to print all the best bits ? I've written film reviews before, and ended up doing plot spoliers, so I've tried to avoid that here

"She stood there Laughing" was quality so looking forward to this one. Dave is it similar to "We don't know what we're doing" the Adrian Chiles book about following The Baggies for a year? Obviously if you haven't read it then you won't know ;D

Dave, Let me know the next time you need something from the good ole USA. What shocks me is the shipping cost from the club shop to the USA ... in a word shocking! "Cost prohibitive" comes to mind.

I don't want to speak to winger. The bastard. He owes me a new phone! Oh, the book...it's very good...has a much better ending than She Stood There Laughing...in fact, if you don't enjoy the moments he describes in our first season, then you didn't enjoy the season. It's all there, every emotion through that roller-coaster ride. Just one aside: PHW's will be at his throat - the traitorous sod. OS.

Sounds very promising but i'm inclined to take my own memories from the experience and not adopt those of others. All credit to Winger for recording his though.

Winger's book is far more interesting than you boring pair of farts talking about a fucking gasworks. Haven't you got any work to do, Mr Wolstanton? Order an arial or summat. Haven't you got a cat litter to clean out, Dave? M.
