I only really started thinking of myself as northern when I was living in the south. Don't think that was to do with how other people saw me, I've never had that much of an accent, but it was a bit like people having a go at us for being a physical long ball team now, it made me dig in. Now I definitely think of North Staffs as on the line where the north starts, joining up with places like Mansfield or Chesterfield. And it's where the Pennines start too after all. Agree with Sal on this one. Had the northern thing when I was living in South Wales- locals couldn't place the accent apart from being 'northern' and the occasional 'scouse'. I think we really are where the North begins, halfway between Manc and Brum and Sal has a point about Mansfield, Chesterfield etc. S-O-T itself is a bit of a no mans land city as we are fairly isolated from the other large towns/cities but there are a host of them between 30-50 miles in pretty much every direction which is why we are such a good distribution centre (along with M-Way links). Always considered us more northern than midland, and I think with steel, coal and high working class population we have more of a common heritage for example with the Lancashire towns than Midlands ones.

Geographically midlands obviously, but to be honest I'm not sure what we are, I lived in kidderminster, and they all thought i was a northerner, none were clever enough to look at a map.
Oh I hated it round there, shit town, full of wolves, birmingham and albion fans, yam yam twats.

Primarily a Stokie but definately a northerner - and I too have been accused of being a scouser or a Manc even though I have a beautiful speaking voice. We are definately more North West than Midlands.

Will go with the northern too. Quite a lot of people I have spoken to consider Stoke the beginning of the North, in fact I have even heard that said on the radio quite a few times.
I also get confused for any number of northern accents, however I think that may just be my inability to speak properly - quite a lot think i'm scottish, but that is just a personal problem.
It is also shit to say you're a midlander.

I've had this argument a million times before and we are definitely north-westeners.
I'm pretty sure N-U-L was historically seen as the start of the North but I might have made that up! Regardless, though, our area and the people in it has a lot more in common with Liverpool and Manchester than Brum or Wolverhampton.
And I always think it's ridiculous that Cheshire is seen as the north-west but Stoke isn't, I know there has to be a cut-off point somewhere but it should be between south and north Staffs, not north Staffs and Cheshire! Rant over..

Couldn’t agree less Bosted. Are you saying I have more in common with someone from Smethwick than someone in Burslem because I was born in Longton ???

Midlander. Dad's family are Brummies, mum's from Stoke. Went to two Midland universities. Bank with the Midland Bank (now HSBC). Always watched BBC Midlands and Central - never Granada. Now live in Lincolnshire - still the Midlands AFAIC. The North's full of Manks, Scousers, Geordies and pontificating Yorkshireman, none of whom I remotely identify with. And I've never owned a whippet or a ferret .

I lived in Wolves for a few years and was often called a scouser. I lived in a student house right outside Molineux, and on the first morning I woke up in that room I realised I couldn't deal with the big yellow shithole of a stadium being the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes every day, so I covered the inside of the window with a massive poster of the Vic!
Anyway, back to the point.......I definately wouldn't lump myself in with the Dingles and Brazilians by calling myself a Midlander, Northener would be better, but none of them could ever come close to being able to call yourself a Stokie!

Whatever suits me at the time! Was in London for a while and instantly labelled as a northerner at work. Probably prefer to be called a northerner as I reckon on a whole they are nicer folk than midlanders.

funny you should bring this up because I had the very same conversation with the wife last week. The wife is a Southerner and she says I cant call myself a proper Northener because technically I was born in the North Midlands. However, most of the people I know down here endearingly refer to me as the "Northern Git," so....?
Well, I look at it like this, firstly Ive always considered myself to be a Northener even though I know technically I could be called a North Midlander? Secondly, I take exception to being geographically linked with Brummies, Brazilich or black country folk (not in a nasty way) more in the way of accents, so therefore Im a Northerner. And thirdly most of my mates say Im a Northerner and the accent sways anyone I meet for the first time that Im a Northener.
So Im a Northener and proud of it, and the funny thing is I havent lost my accent one bit ;D

Northener, only because we are nothing like the stereotypical midlanders from Birmingham etc. in terms of accent so we can relate to the north west more easily as has previously been said.

The accent definitely changes away from Potteries somewhere between Barlaston and Stone - so I would put the Maison Dixon line somewhere next to Meaford Lock

Stoke is in the west midlands, in my opinion the north west begins roughly at crewe/maccelsfield etc.
Stokes local teams are the midlands teams such as WBA, Wolves etc not man city/bury/tranmere.
As much as people would prefer to be northern than lumped with the brummy tossers its sadly true.
ok to a cockney it is northern but to those in the know it is certainly midlands.

This debate rages on and on every day in my flat. Except for the weird King's Lynn bastard and the Hong Kong youth, I'm actually the most Southern member of the flat, so they all call be "that soft Southern twat" on a daily basis cause they know it annoys me.

At school my geography teacher always said that the official north south divide was the river Trent. (wasn't a school anywhere near Stoke either).
