TP said it all in his post match interview:
Williams was asked yesterday if he could turn out. The guy hasn't kicked a ball in anger for 3 months - thats a quarter of a year!! The guy is moving towards the end of his career and he totally puts his neck on the line in front of the 2nd largest home crowd this season. On top of that he manages to put in a MOM performance.
Credit also to Pulis - when the man talks of 'experienced' players, he certainly knows what it takes to get the job done out there.
Williams has got bollocks. What he did for the team today should be appaulded

Who could disagree with that?
Williams was given a real test yersterday and he passed it with flying colours. Pulis also took a huge gamble. I thought he was wrong to do it when I saw what he team was going to be but not for the first time this season I was proved to be wrong.
Well done Paul Williams - didn't put a foot wrong!

I think I'll have to disagree with you people on this one. While I admit that there weren't any obvious individual errors from Williams, it seemed noticable to me that the defence as a whole looked a lot more shaky with his return, evidenced by the fact that we conceded 2 goals for the first time in 10 matches, and could have easily conceded 4 or 5 (disallowed goal, manic goalmouth scrambles etc.) . Although I agree with NYCP's comment that he showed guts, I think that TP made a mistake in playing him, and should have played the more reliable Halls as partner to Taggart, and given Brian Wilson an opportunity at right back. Feel free to shout me down though!

I see what you are getting at Andy. Whilst both Williams and Taggart had decent games, as a unit they have no mobility or pace - we certainly missed Thomas. That said, Halls had such a poor game (by far his worst in a Stoke shirt) that we might have conceeded more if he had partnered Taggart yesterday - who knows? I'll be happy when Thommo is back.

AndyK,
Neil Cutlers dilly dallying (yet again) did nothing to help the defence did it?
Everytime he plays you can see the confidence drain out of the back four.
Take Williams out of that side yesterday and i don't think you could have stopped any of Walsalls goals.
both goals were scored in the 6yard box. Where was our 6'4" goalkeeper demanding his area?

By the looks of it John Halls may have been meant to take up a place alongside Taggart but as he wasn't fully fit (had to have a painkilling injection and was therefore not upto speed) Pulis decided to play him at right-back where he was less vunerable.
I'm not sure Pulis knew who was going to be playing at the back until sometime on Friday (or even Saturday) when he knew the fitness level of Halls, and to me he made the right decision playing Williams and Halls where they were as Wilson only arrived back to train on Friday didn't he?!
I wasn't at the game by the way, didn't even listen to it infact, but thats what I've got from reading all the posts on here.
