I've not heard a single fan stick up for this idea to have a 39th game to be played abroad.... Well just hold on a minute, killjoys. I think it could if implemented correctly be an intersting addition to the game. I, and I'm sure one or 2 others, would love to travel abroad to watch Stoke in a competative match once in a while, and if it generates money for the club to boot, then why the hell not? One or two issues to iron out before it gets anything like my full support though... 1) Random ties cannot happen. IF you happen to be playing the Arsenal 3 times in a season, just through drawing a short straw, then relegation would be a tough pill to swallow... How about though a 'mid season play-off' whereby top plays bottom, 2nd plays 2nd bottom etc etc. That way, there would be incentive for all teams to do as well as possible to get an easier tie - the way 3rds place teams in the play-offs are 'rewarded' by playing the team 6th. Ties could be auctionned by position, rather than club, and the excitement for all concerned would be ace if you only found out where you'd be heading to a week or 2 in advance. A point away Fulham and it's Miami, 3 points and it's Hong Kong... This could be right up there with hte magoic of the 3rd round cup draw. 2) The money genertaed needs to be split EQUALLY betwen the teams. Bolton -v- Portsmouth in front of 10,000 in the Saddam Hussein stadium, Baghdad (just imagine ; ) needs to receive the same ££££ as Stoke -v- Manure playing in front of 250,000,000 on the moon. 3) And whilst we're at it, lets chuck a % down the pyramid too. 4) All matches to be shown back wom FOC on telly. 5) Maybe the clubs could also chuck a % into getting as many fans out to the host city as possible. I've kind of seen it working in the form of Aussie rules where certain games are taken to the provinces. I remember the mighty Fremantle Dockers beating St Kilda in a controversial match in Tasmania for example, games are also taken to other cities that don't have an AFL team, and to New Zealand too. I'm not sure, but wouldn't be surprised if every team has a 1 match commtment to this each season. It's accepted there and the matches are eagerly anticipated in the host cities - especially when the super-purples of Fremantle roll into town [ ] I don't have a problem with the idea if it's done properly - ie my way! - and could envisage it sprinkling a pinch of much needed magic into the middle of the season. Sadly though, I don't trust the powers that be to do this.

There are much simpler ways of resolving the problems in the game, but unfortunately for us, everyone in charge of the game is a ****.

It'd be a great idea, were it not for the fact that the game is run by a bunch of money-gobbling cuntscrubbers.

Your comment, Kenilworth, applies to everyone involved in football, with the exception of the fans.

It's a bad idea because the checks you suggest to make it fair have no chance of being implemented. In fact, the idea has been conceived with the opposite intention - it's not meant to be fair, it'll be designed to ensure that the top teams make more money and fuck everyone else.

I'm totally against it for the simple reason that flying two sides plus all their support staff etc etc halfway around the world is a ridiculous and pointless way to pump yet more CO2 into the atmosphere.
Still, I guess when we're all knee deep in sea water, the Premiership fat cats will be ok on their little islands.

I love football and love watching Stoke City. If the powers that be take that away from me I will find another sport. Simple really.......

One aspect of this I don't get is where are they going to play these games? Either you try to play in a country that likes football, but then they won't let you in because the local association will want to protect the domestic game, or you go somewhere where they don't care about football, in which case nobody local is interested and you've just blackmailed a few thousand supporters into shelling out huge amounts for the most pointlessly distant away fixture ever. The only potential justification for this is the thought that the top clubs might make even more money, but it's not clear how clubs making more money can possibly help any of us. The recent evolution of the domestic game has been a complete disaster for the average fan, since a minority of top flight games start at 3pm on Saturday, so it's hard to plan a weekend routine, and average entry prices have gone up by a factor of 6 since the inception of the Premier League. Just because it's an idea that will blight the experience of fans doesn't mean it won't happen, sadly. I guess I may end up having to decide whether to stay up late or get up early for the 5am kick-off between Stoke and Leicester in Sydney.
It's a damn stupid idea which will happen as long as the decision makers think it will increase their profits. Sigh.
