Hm.....not totally settled yet, perhaps. Certainly not as regards the full back positions. And the two big guys are only just getting to know each other. I think all the ingredients are there plus Diao will help a lot. Whelan can be the boy, though, if he's allowed to. I've seen him really dictate games.

I happen to think (keeping my original name too) that the emerging similarities between what Tony Waddinton did (god rest his soul) and what Tony Pulis is doing is actually doing - are quite compelling.
you see- I dont suffer from the 'blind dogma' or, rose tinted glasses (about Waddo) you seem to (kinnel ? hudson ?) about our latest man

You don't seem to be able to think of any similarities, Tony. Hardly surprising. There aren't many! Waddo did have two legs, though. He never wore a baseball cap either. He'd have LOATHED Pulis's 'football'. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

From all I've read amd heard (wasn't there at the time, I'd love to hear about this from anyone who was), a better comparison than Waddo would be TP and Bob McGrory - inclined to be dour, not necessarily liked, came in when S-o-T had had the shit kicked out of it (unlike Waddo, who came in when industry and the spirit of the place were on the rise), average defender when playing, but actually came as near as anyone to winning the title, produced several outstanding players but buggered Sir Stan off because there was too much ego involved.
Can someone who was there tell me about the Waddington Wall please? It doesn't sound so far from TP's two blocks of four, if you can translate an idea into another age like that - but he wasn't the Total Football manager people talk about till we were well established in the old First Division, was he?

Sal, the wall was a VERY temporary measure to stave off relegation. And Waddo did sign some wonderful footballers who gained us promotion a couple of years later, Sir Stan most notable amongst them. But let's not forget Jackie Mudie, a brilliant inside forward, or Jimmy McIlroy, another midfield genius, or Dennis Viollet, a brilliantly canny striker from Man U. Waddo was also one of the first to play exhibition matches against the greats of world football and, famously, coined the phrase 'working man's ballet'. Waddo's priority was ALWAYS 'can he play football?' regardless of lifestyle. Waddo was always confident that he could get the most aberrant characters to play. And by god, did he sign some characters. Like Eddie Clamp and the brilliant but, at times, crazy, Maurice Setters. Colourful times indeed. Of the current crop, I guess that Fuller fits that mould. Waddo would have liked him!.

Things I found out today:
He wears a baseball cap because he's a superstitious chap. He's worn a cap since his Gillingham days. He tries to refrain sometimes, but the hat compels him to wear it.
