this is the sorta crazy thing that happens at stoke - a despised manager brings us to the brink of the promised land - then leaves because he doesnt think he's welcome and a local club (to his home and family) offers him a better salary
shouldn't - wouldn't normally happen - but at stoke - its daft - so its possible
lets hope his 'close' relationship with Peter is as close as both suggest

Can't say I'm desperate for him to stay. He's achieved nowt , his football has been bloody awful to watch on the whole and it's taken him nearly two years to bring some creativity in. BUT he's done that now so I'm happy to see if he can achieve summat in May. Having said that, given the Coates bankroll, I don't think we'll be short of applications from potential replacements. And nobody's snapped Ince up from MKD yet, don't forget. Now there's a thought!

I'm still not quite seeing it with Ince I must admit, if TP did go to Soton I suspect we'll be after more track record. But I think Soton are so bloody dodgy that even if they did offer him the job it would probably fall through.

Hes doing the same as the other Tony - Tony Waddington did in the sixties - building something from virtually nothing, unappreciated, in a blighted ambivolent seventies throw back of a crap hole AND, THERE ARE STILL NUMB individuals, incapable of objective thought, computer literate ones too, that haven't even sussed it yet
amazed !

Tony, Waddo loved the game AND loved the best the world game could offer. Pulis does not. That's why Waddo was and is a legend here and Pulis will never be. The man has no passion for the game and that's why he is so widely disliked where Waddo was universally loved. He is also very arrogant, unlike Waddo, which is why he will never learn anything new and will never achieve more than he has done already, which is next to sweet f all. Your 'comparisons' beggar belief.

He's changed his name due to the fact that he has realised he now looks a complete prick and can shove his red cards up his arse.

kinnell, I don't know how you can say TP's got no passion for the game. It's not your kind of creative passion, no-one's saying he's not a pragmatist, but if you see him in the dugout and see the loyalty and commitment he inspires in his players - well that's what I call passion, anyhow. I don't believe he's widely disliked either. He's won a lot of Stokies over who were very resistant at first, and now he's getting more national coverage it's always respectful of him as a person. As for arrogant, sure, that's bound to be in there somewhere, you couldn't do his job over time without a thick skin and an overdose of self-belief. But it's certainly not all he is, or as I say he couldn't inspire such loyalty from the people who matter most, the team.

I think you miss the point, Sal. Sure, Pulis has a passion to achieve. Don't we all? But the problem is that he has no discernible LOVE for the game of football. It's this and his narrow-minded attachment to a byegone system of play, his arrogant refusal to learn from his many mistakes and his apparent dislike of players from more successful football nations that have made him a failure in almost all he has ever attempted to do with this undeniable 'will to win'. As for now, I'm hoping that he has learned one lesson at last: that in this MODERN day and age the old certainties of John Beck long ball and battering-ram strikers win the square root of bugger all. Pulis betrayed a hint of learning last season in hiring Hendrie but then chickened out when it came to playing him in a more influential role. As for Berger, he chickened out completely when, with the footballing influence of these two, we could have stormed our way to promotion. The signings of Gallagher and especially Whelan are really exciting. Let's just hope Pulis doesn't keep the former on the bench and the latter on a short leash in his own half. The rest of the team is there. The defence is a great unit. And Diao will add extra protection. I believe, though, that the way Pulis handles Whelan and Gallagher will make the difference between glory and obscurity.

kinnell, I agree with every word of the last part of that, starting with Gally and Whelan. I want to believe they'll prove at least some of your first part wrong - let's see eh. I'm especially excited because Gally and Whelan are players on the rise, who could go on to have their best years at SCFC, and don't bring the baggage and attitude Hendrie did. As for Berger I'm not sure we'll ever know how much of that was lack of fitness and how was TP not taking the risk, there just wasn't the opportunity to judge.
(Seeing two of my avatars on top of each other looks really worrying, sorry about that)

Also, as you're coming back to this fresher than me, why do you reckon the defence (I agree, a great unit in theory) has been leaking so many goals? Lack of a dominant personality there and Diao not in place to cover are my best theories but there's something that doesn't quite make sense and I'm not sure what.
