Fav. Song from that game - Poor man's Sidibe, you're just a poor man's Sidibe (poor old emile!)

The home stands at Wigan are rarely if ever full. The Wigan population just don't "get" football - it is much more of a rugby town. Because of this they usually offer well over 3,000 tickets to away fans - as do Blackburn. To be fair - both towns are pretty small to have top flight clubs - more Burslem sized tham Stoke on Trent sized!

Wigan Athletic FC get higher crowds 17/18k Wigan Warriors RLFC average around 16K as for the population "not getting football" , more wiganers get football, than people from stoke it would appear . Wigan has a population of just 80,000, and has another Premier League club just 6 miles down the road . So proportionally more of them attend games than Stokies

Morning Dave, does Wigan attract many fans from a distance? It always amazes me that there are Stokies who don't really have roots in Stoke. I suppose theye are our own little band of glory hunters! ;D Does Wigan have anything similar?

Lakeland: they have picked up plenty of fans since the springfield park days. I haven't been to the JJB or posted on there MBs enough to guage where they are from. I do think a small proportion are people who support another north west side, but just want to see premiership football, the same exists at Bolton

I know a family of season ticket holders at Wigan who live near me, they have no affiliation with Wigan just that it's cheap and easy access to watch top flight football. I also know a colleague who is a Wigan season ticket holder who lives near to St Helens (the RFL arch enemies) he goes with his daughters as it's cheap to watch top flight football. i wonder what would happen with their crowds if they get relegated, - 7-8k?

northwich: they'd probably retain more than you give them credit for. As my inlaws live about a mile from the ground, I've had first hand experience of what their rise as done for their support. When first started going there almost never saw people walking around in replica wigan athletic shirts, Man U, Liverpool, Everton and Wigan RL shirts were far more common. Now you see plenty of latics shirts, and a lot less of the the others, expecially amongst the youngsters.
What I didn't realise till I met kathryn was that Wigan RL are the Man United of Rugby League, less of their fans come from wigan than people realise, and that their is real annimosity between the 2 sets of fans now they are both in their top divisions, its almost like a stoke/vale situation. Whilst one of them was shit, it was OK to see the other one (went to a challenge cup final in 99) but not anymore, you are either a latic or a "worrier" . They even sing songs about them
They come from scholes and whelly they haven't got a telly their very fucking smelly the warriors family da da da dum

Cheers Northwich. I suppose I can understand that it is cheap to watch football for somone who lives within travelling distance but has no roots in the town. Personally, on the two occasions I have been to the JJB (once in the Champ and once in the Prem) the atmosphere in the home areas has looked pretty dire. If I was a neutral wanting to watch top flight footy, I'd hope I could find somewhere with a bit more passion - Stoke perhaps? ;D

The Shit had got 5,000 there last night, but didn't appear to have sold out: there were two small pockets of seats visibly empty. There were also a few empty seats in their end at Boro. Astonishing, really.
