www.goal.com/en-us/news/1614/americans-abroad/2009/05/13/1263460/the-short-list-moving-around Oguchi Onyewu. He's being linked with some big clubs. 6' 5" brute of an American centre-half, who was allegedly the "mystery European-based target" that the Sentinel focused on for ages when we finally seemed to get the Icelandic transfer kitty about 5 years ago. When he arrived back at Stoke from Plymouth, he used his pursuit of Onyewu to to argue he was interested in foreign players - if they were good enough. He'd certainly fit in here now? Martin Spinks: What about the players you're inheriting, particularly Sammy Bangoura and Carl Hoefkens? Do they have a future at the Britannia?
Tony Pulis: Oh I see, the foreign players thing again. Look, I was disappointed and just a bit annoyed when the official reason for sacking me was my supposed failure to exploit the foreign market.
Let me tell you there's a centre-half now in the American World Cup squad (Standard Liege's Oguchi Onyewu) that I recommended to the Icelandic board when we could have got him for a reasonable fee. I recently contacted his agent and was told he's probably going to be sold to someone like Porto or Middlesbrough - and is clearly way out of reach now. At Plymouth there were five foreign lads regularly in the team. The bottom line is always the same - if they're good enough I don't care where they're from. I'm not at all prejudiced.Same American blog thing suggest we might be a good fit for a young fast and physical forward called Altidore who plays for Villarreal.

Altidore was very highly rated before his move to Spain. It doesn't seem like he has hit it off at Villarreal though. We were linked with Onyewu last summer so it wouldn't surprise me if he came to the Brit- just hope he is a bit better than his last spell in the Premier League.

He's only the same size as Ryan - we need more height to bolster our defence!

just hope he is a bit better than his last spell in the Premier League. To be fair, Newcastle United is the graveyard of good defenders. Jean Alain Boumsong was very highly rated at Rangers and has done well for Juventus and Lyon, but was awful at Newcastle Onyewu was outstanding when Liverpool played Liege at the start of the season

That's very true Diaofan about Onyewu's performance for Liege. Also, if he is half as good as our last ex-Newcastle defender...

He's a cracking defender !
Better back up than Sonks IMO, I really don't care if he can throw he gets me anxious unlike any of our current back 4.

I can't see Pulis not being interested.
If he was seriously sniffing 'round him in the Gislason era, he must be right up his street.
Centre-back may not be first priority, but he always buys at least one.
It'll be interesting to see where Higginbotham stands in the pecking order should he buy a new left-back though.

'Gooch' would be a great signing for us, people say how bad he was at Newcastle, but fucking Bobby Moore would probably have played shite in the Newcastle team in the last few seasons, even A.D. Faye didn't look great in NUFC shirt!!!
