Given the price of Premiership football it isn't surprising that the middle classes make up an increasing percentage of Premier League attendances
I always thought that the areas around Stoke would eventually swell our gates as those outside the city took the opportunity to watch top class football close to home
However I heard on Saturday of a relatively local family rejecting the opportunity of watching Stoke, not because of the cost, but because they didn't want their children listening to some of our more colourful banter
Could the crowd chants limit our attendance growth?

Who gives a fuck. If they don't like it, there are plenty of plastic teams to watch that are not too far away from Stoke.

Perhaps the proud mother and father who were so horrified at the prospect of a bit recreational weekend swearing have never been near any playground in the country where you can often learn a new word or two. Neither have they been in the chip shop near my office at lunhtime and listend to little foul mouthed bastards in there. Perhaps they should buy a huge house made of cotton wool and stable their offspring there?

I don't think it will to be honest, because lets face it how do you stop kids from hearing foul language? If they don't hear it at a football game they'll hear it elsewhere. And i'm sure the parents who take their kids to games must be aware of what to expect.

I should hope not. I remember being little and my mum not wanting me to go for the very same reason, and we certainly aint no middle class family, no siree. If the little kids still want to go, fantastic, have them sit in the family stand or JS or wherever, get them on board early. If not they'll be at high school in a few years where the 'banter' tends to be much, much worse anyway

They probably couldn't afford it, but didn't want to admit it. Easier to blame bad language, if it hadn't been that it'd be something like 'the people in front wouldn't sit down.

Parents are very naive when it comes to things like this. Kids hear these words every day at school

It's not like the Brit is the only football ground where you hear swearing is it. I do feel guilty sometimes when I have kids close buy me and I am swearing, but we do have a family stand for that reason. Plus I’m sad to say I don’t think I could stop myself from swearing at a football match even if I wanted to. I've never sat in the family stand personally, but I would like to think swearing in that prevalent in there.

my spurs season ticket holding mate sums it up best
"i have taken my lad to footy for years and he is now 19 and comes with me as my mate, when he was younger i let him swear at the footy as we would pick it up every where. outside of footy if i heard swearing come out of his mouth especially in front of his mother i would thrash him"
or words to that effect, that is probably how i will deal with it with my boy

I think it's a bit of a myth that only working-class people shout and swear and verbally abuse people...The middle-classes are just as equipped to do it...remember a lot of people who live in big houses didn't start life that way... Football matches are a 'vehicle' in which its 'socially-acceptable' to shout and swear and act like a complete Psychotic Lunatic for 90 minutes every other week..and get all the pent up frustration and anger and venom out of your system.. The best 'Anger-Management Sytem' ever devised... Long may it fucking continue...

it`s all bollocks really. with the `new proffesionals` moving into the area we`ll get lots of them coming to the brit if they are really into their footy & fancy supporting a local succesfull club & get their kids into stoke city too-which is good news for us, the others who `don`t like all the sweary stuff` would`nt come anyway, anyone who REALLY likes footy knows swearing is part & parcel on & off the pitch. if the don`t want to come so what, they can allways watch tennis, golf, cricket etc.

Jesus i'd be more worried about my kids watching beheadings, people getting splattered by cars and graphic hardcore porn on their mates phones and on the internet than i would about a bit of swearing. Any parent that can't teach their kids not to swear when in polite company are bad parents.
Or go in the john smiths upper its quieter than a library up there.

Obviously I am joking, they both work aaaarrrrdddd and dont swear much, but at football its different its letting off steam and passion. I hate this PC European Rights, fluffy pink world, its crap. I sit in the family stand block 33 this year, and the swearing in there is just as bad as anywhere else (previously a boothen ender). Perhaps a little less frequent though, i guess most of the parents in there sometimes forget they have kids all around them..
Almost lost it myself this week though, who let all the numptys off the hill in at 85 minutes, my lads (5 and 7) were terrified. Loads of em stnding down the aisle for the last 10 minutes total arses.. Swearing, my kids are used to, they know not to ask!! But pissed up arseholes, no thanx!!!

To be fair I admire them for sticking to their principles. Obviously, there will always be swearing at football matches and particularly at clubs like Stoke but they feel they dont want to subject their children to this and fair credit to them.
Anybody who says that swearing is a part of life and they shouldnt be so fussy should stop to think that if more people adopted this family's model then there wouldnt be as much swearing, or it would at least be confined to relevant places or situations. Personally, I swear like a trooper.....when the situation or venue calls for it. It's called self restraint.
Swearing is just a tiny example of dumbing down. It's like all things in life nowadays.......we just keep accepting thats the way the world is and there's nothing we can do about it, when clearly there is plenty we can do. Other examples are violence on the telly, violence on computer games etc etc. Maybe more of us should adopt this family's approach to life and the country would be a slightly better place.
I expect loads of ridicule on this one, but its my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

I expect loads of ridicule on this one, but its my opinion and I'm sticking to it. Sounds like you've been reading the daily mail too much mate, its exactly this 'down with this filth' attitude that makes things worse. Censorship doesn't work. Less violence on tv and videogames will make no difference what so ever to anyone apart from causing a ripple effect of censorship no other forms of media and art and stifling creativity in any number of artistic endeavours. Not only that by censoring stuff that kids are exposed to it becomes ten times more desirable to them (human nature). Masquerading censorship as family values is exactly what the religious right does in America and you end up with a shit load of sheltered ignorant book burning retards. Shelter a kid from anything he will hammer it as soon as he gets the chance, the sooner it is normal to them the better. Of course this is within limits on both how young they are exposed to anything and what it is all stuff which is up to the parent and down to common sense. But swearing, come on, what harm has it ever done to anyone, Fuck All.
