Any Oatcake posters with a bit of time on their hands (like me today) can fill an hour or two making football chalkboards here: www.guardian.co.uk/football/chalkboards/createI compared our two wide midfielders. I can’t show the diagrams, which show Lawrence all over the right-hand half of the pitch, with Etherington rarely going far from the touchline, but here’s a summary of the last three home games: Passes – Successful/Total (including corners taken) Tackles – Won/Total v. Middlesbrough Passes Lawrence 16/23 (5) Etherington 7/8 Tackles Lawrence 1/4 Etherington 0/0 v. Newcastle Passes Lawrence 21/29 (4) Etherington 8/15 (1) Tackles Lawrence 2/4 Etherington 0/2 v. Blackburn Passes Lawrence 15/24 (2) Etherington 10/15 Tackles Lawrence 2/4 Etherington 2/5 Lawrence makes twice as many passes as Etherington, and is slightly more accurate, and nearly twice as many tackles. ‘aaaard work!’ Incidentally, the best passer in the team is Abdy Faye

NAIL ON HEAD ,,,the bottom line is IF we beat fulham this week we ARE in the hunt for that last europa cup spot along with fulham..........West Ham,Spurs and Wigan all have difficult games this week and we could be right in the mix come 5 pm saturday...........this story has come about to try and unsettle us before we go there no other reason

Lawrence makes twice as many passes as Etherington, and is slightly more accurate, and nearly twice as many tackles. I tried to make this point on here yesterday, but didn't have the stats to back it up. Etherington made a great start for us, but I don't think he's been any great shakes for us since his return from suspension. Maybe he's carrying a knock and I certainly don't want him to leave (unless Tone has got somebody better as a replacement), but equally I'm not going to bury my head in the sand and pretend he's been playing well lately, when I can see he isn't.

Best left midfielder a club like Stoke at this present time could realistically hope for.

4 million and I'd be tempted, perhaps Pulis see's Ledley filling his place. Exactly what I thought, although it appears the Wolves would be willing to outbid us on Ledley and I'm not sure he's worth what we'd have to pay.

Ledley really isn't a left winger though is he? If I was holding the purse strings I'd make a cheeky bid for Johnson at Boro........although Downing's bound to leave if they go down and I think Johnson's a ready-made replacement. Pace and trickery aplenty and a few people in the know think he could be a full England player. Ethers is an average Prem player who I was never that keen on at West Ham but he's added balance and delivery where it didn't exist beforehand.

interesting stats there delia, but hardly surprising. Lawrence makes lots of passes between himself and the full back when they are trying to work the ball out of our half, whereas ethers and higgy's partnership is more a case of higgy gives etherington the ball and ethers gets on his bike into the space - when ethers chooses to release the ball it is more often than not a ball inside to whelan or ball into the corner for fuller to chase.
He was poor saturday. His first chance i thought maybe ric should have played it along the ground. Otherwise matty seemed a bit reluctant to leave his marker and was hovering around the half way line too much when he had plenty of space to go into before being offside. Often the most sucessful combination down the left has been higgy playing it over their right back for ethers to get on the end of, but ethers was always looking for a ball to his feet rather than making the run to the corner flag - when he got that ball into feet he didn't really do enough to skin his man unfortunately, more often than not getting tackled by ooijer as he turned, i'd have liked to see him get on his bike without the ball a bit more, at the very least it'd have stretched blackburn. Ooijer is a quality player though, not all that surprising that he won the individual battle down that flank.
