All this obviously does assume that we are going to retain our Premier League status next season.
Unless we want another season of struggle, Buxton's list isn't too far wide of the mark. The players mentioned there are decent enough footballers (for the most part) but now we need to try and move on to the next level.
A first team squad of around 25 players IS ideal whether Mourinho said it or not, but all of those 25 need to feel that there is a genuine chance of reaching and maintaining the starting line-up, otherwise you'll start getting discontent which does happen with better players.

Bolton fans reckon that AB Faye best position is CM/DM and when he played there v Everton he had Fellaini in his pocket, not many have been able say taht this season. Mate I'm sure Abdoulaye is great in central midfield and you could be right he might be even better there than at centre back but I'm really struggling to believe that we could (within our budget) replace him with somebody his equal at centre back. I could be wrong though.

Just thought that CM is the most important part of the pitch to compete in. If he can keep people like Fellaini/Gerrard quiet then the defence won't have any work to do

Yep agree 100%. If we stay up and are going to be serious about pushing on then there's a few players that will need to be shipped out and replaced with better quality leaving us with a first team squad of about 25.

I thought Ab Faye was poor in midfield against Everton. Slow in possessionand lost it easily. I wouldn't piss about with the centre of defence, it's fine. A proper left back would be nice, with Higgy as cover for CB and LB.

We definately need a proper left back for next season, I couldn't really see Konchesky coming to us, maybe Nicky Shorey would be more realistic. I would be looking for at least one and probably two new centre mids. I agree with buxton on the shout for O'Neil and maybe even Huddlestone (family in Derbyshire) but he may by out of our league as well.

I don't think he would be out of our league. If you think we are 13th in the league, thats in division 3 in the PL behind the big 4 and then your Spurs Everton, Villa etc who are in division 2

If you think we are 13th in the league, thats in division 3 in the PL behind the big 4 and then your Spurs Everton, Villa etc who are in division 2 That's a really good point buxton. If we finish the season on a convincing high it will be interesting to see if our targets in the summer will view us on an equal footing to the likes of Bolton, Wigan, Fulham, Sunderland (if they stay up) and Blackburn (if they stay up) etc. I think there is a pretty good chance they will see us as an equal. You would expect that the top four plus Villa and Citeh will be looking at completely different markets than us so in effect that leaves Spurs, West Ham and Everton who would be seen as a bigger clubs than us. If Everton or West Ham weren't interested in Huddlestone then we may have a very good chance of getting him unless Fulham were to come in and he didn't want to leave the capital. I still can't see why Konchesky would want to come to us though. ???
