Ah Saturday brings the latest saviour, Messiah, Geordie Guru or God himself to the Britannia Stadium and with him will come the mass ranks of the Toon army. Yes the Shearer road show is coming to town. It’s like having Chipperfield’s three ringed circus set up camp at the Brit, though for the players sakes it’s hoped they don’t train them like Mary trained her chimps or there will be some very sore heads come game time and it wont be because they were out on the Toon the night before. What a training session that would be, Dowie turning up with a bag of balls and an iron bar, Joey Barton would think it was Christmas, do we all get a turn with the iron bar boss.
I have no real beef with Newcastle’s new saviour, he has been complimentary about us most of the season and therefore have no animosity towards him other than the manager of another relegation rival who need to be beaten. Though he just doesn’t seem very inspirational or Messiah like, who can take a Messiah called Mary Poppins seriously. Though of course it’s a no lose situation for Shearer, if he succeeds then riches are his for the asking, if he fails he can walk away and say I tried but in 8 games what could I do with that lot. His reputation will be intact unless or until he takes the job full time, then the real problems will begin.
When Shearer speaks it’s like listening to Gordon Brown, it doesn’t matter if what he’s saying makes any sense you just feel the urge to yawn, scratch your ass and lapse into a coma. No wonder he brought Ian Dowie in as his assistant, though it could have the opposite effect, imagine gently falling asleep listening to Alan giving his instructions and then hearing a yell and being confronted with Dowie’s face up close. The players would be wondering when did Disney make Mary Poppins meets the Munster’s. I am sure when he introduced himself at training they were playing what’s that coming over the hill, is it a Munster.
The media circus that is Newcastle United is however a different matter. It’s ridiculous that a club who haven’t won anything in decades still get such stomach churning adulation from the press. We’re told it would be a tragedy for football if Newcastle were relegated, we need them in the top flight, it just wont be the same without them. If they get relegated it will be a tragedy for their long suffering supporters but for football, sorry no they like any other club wont be missed. Did anyone in the same field say how the Premiership wasn’t the same cause we weren’t in it, no they could of cared less and I feel the same about Newcastle. Three clubs will replace them if they go down and next season will begin in August, maybe they’ll hold a minutes silence for the loss of Newcastle before the kick off.
With the loss of Brazil also it’s not going to be a good year for the roses in media circles, they were the great survival hopes from last years promotion crop, the other two were merely there to fulfil the fixture quota, one season wonders who would come and go faster than 17 year old virgin with premature ejaculation. Though it didn’t work out that way, the beloved Brazilians have found the Premiership a real struggle and their flowing football has only flowed till the 18 yard box and then someone stood on the pipe and impeded the flow to a harmless trickle.
When I was young the hero on Tyneside was Super Mac, Malcolm MacDonald of course now a Super Mac is the new Toon Burger developed by McDonalds for the larger supporters of Newcastle, it has enough calories to sink a battle ship yet strangely is only a between meals snack for the likes of Micky twelve bellies and eight chins Quinn.
Gazza sung about the fog on the Tyne, that could well be the club song, the mist has long since descended over St James Park and no matter how many crystal balls are looked into it shows little sign of clearing. Even if Newcastle survive are they any closer to their Utopian ideal of global domination laden with trophies and European football, sadly next season is likely to be just another catalogue of frustration and performing acts who simply don’t live up to their billing.
We can’t be to smug about it as we’ve been there and worn many t shirts but we can appreciate what we have. We have all seen the three ringed circus years, my God we came as close to the wall as I ever want to come. So now is the time to enjoy what is a truly wonderful time. On Saturday we will witness the three ringed circus in town but thankfully we are just the onlookers in this particular version and I thank God for that.
We have a stable club, one which is run well from top to bottom and one which is reaping the benefits of that stability. I freely admit when Peter Coates returned and then appointed Tony Pulis it was like being told Burke and Hare were hovering around your Grandmas grave after dark but I was wrong, they have brought back the pride and passion for this club. There are still things about Tone that drive me to distraction but less with each passing game. I really believe he’s beginning to understand that away from home we don’t simply have to hang on for dear life. Then having players playing in their right positions and with the ability to hurt opponents make a real difference. Football sides evolve slowly, they don’t just happen because supporters want it. It is becoming obvious we are evolving and it’s wonderful to be a part of that process, supporters who have been starved of hope and belief we’d ever see such a time again and yet here we are. It may not last forever but it’s going to be a damn good ride while it does.
Like all supporters we have hopes, expectations and a desire for some success but we are beginning to understand none of those can happen overnight and none of them can happen if we are divided and pulling in ten different directions, over this season the unity has returned and it’s wonderful to be a part of. Supporters who wont take abuse of their club, players or themselves lying down. When people have thrown their ill informed abuse at the club, the manager, owner, players and the supporters have responded with humour, controlled anger and most of all dignity in the face of irrational dislike in some cases. What a difference a few years make, a club united from top to bottom, stable from top to bottom and reaping it’s rewards for being so.
The future is bright, the future is filled with uncertainties but if we face them as one unified force we can overcome any difficulties. Thanks to Peter Coates, the players and Tony Pulis for ending the three ringed circus and just providing us with entertainment rather than making us a laughing stock. On Saturday for once we will be the ones nodding our heads and saying, been there done that as we watch Mary Poppins three ringed circus take the field. I wish them luck but if they fail it's football and not smug self satisfaction more a sad reminder of harsher times. I truly hope those days never return to Stoke.

To post so many words and yet not waste any - a gift you have Ted.
A thought about Dowie's appointment - given that Beardsley's still at the club, is to make him feel better about himself? "Hey, I might be ugly, but at least I'm not the only one".

understand where you're coming from but we've done nowt yet.
Knowing football and Stoke as I do, it could all come crashing down very quickly.
Defeat to the Geordies on Saturday will put us back in the mix, make no mistake.
We need to keep a lid on the back-slapping for a bit.
When we are safe ..... that's the time for the plaudits.

I think Momo would take exception to that with Scholes in mind.

So, if I have this right.
- -
Newcastle are a shambles. They wanted a rabble rousing cure for their ills, but they appointed Shearer instead.
Newcastle are popular with the media - they have media folk heroes like Shearer, Gazza and SupeMac (and I think you mentioned Quinn here as well!!). Because of this the media misrepresents the case for Newcaslte's right to a place in the Prem. But, like WBA if they're are not good enough they deserve to go down.
Stoke on the other hand returned to the Premiership in a lean and healthy state. I doesn't guarantee us success, we need to learn lessons about how to compete in this league, but in it's own way it gives us more right to a place in the Premiership than Newcastle have at the moment.

I agree with this. I think we have been more fortunate than most clubs to have a benefactor. But in comparison to Newcastle we have had less of a hand up by a long way. They have had their benefactor in Sir John Hall. They had years of good growth under Shepherd, they have had their pck of top managers and now they have their big-time business backer in Mike Ashley. Yet they have conspired to fall apart.
They not only deserve to be relegated, they probably need to be.

Totally agree.
But we all know it doesn't work like that.
The jammy bastards will probably wriggle out of it courtesy of some dodgy refereeing decision.

Malvern mate I agree, they would be much better off in the long run if they went down and regrouped and got a reality check. I hope we can help them in their long term growth on Saturday. My guess is they may just escape with either Hull or Sunderland taking their place in the bottom 3.
