Is a quality referee, and always seems to favour Stoke.
Discuss.

I've always found him to be a bit inconsistent and I have never noticed a pro Stoke bias - not that I've ever noticed an anti Stoke bais either.

I thought he was very good when he ref'd us in the championship. I think he is the kind of ref that likes proper footie so when a few hard tackles went in (from either side) he would let the game carry on. I cant remember who we played but he was always waving get up after they had gone down very easy. A very good ref at championship level but rarely saw him have a great game when in the prem.

He didn't send off Taggart for throttling Wise.

Fat and clueless. The most unpredicatable ref around. He loves the attention

He didn't send off Taggart for throttling Wise. Indeed. He realised what Wise was up to - how he pinched Gerry's "inner thigh" in that tackle. One of the funniest things I've seen at the Brit. Gave them both yellow cards I think.

Very underrated IMO, he didn't take any crap from the players which probably ruffled the feathers of the big boys and meant he didn't climb the refereeing ladder.

I've always thought he's done a good job when refereeing Stoke, but a pretty bad job as a whole. Apparently he's not retired, just not done much recently due to injuries and fitness problems. He's 49 though, what's the age at which they're forced to retire?

always thought they retired at 45-46 so I can't see him being 49.But having just checked you are right,

Very inconsistent as are most referees.
He doesn't seem intimidated by the big players though and is not afraid to give a decision unlike most.
I can think of alot worse refs lets put it that way.

I think he was a kung fu / martial arts dan so maybe thats why poncy players didnt get any joy out of him. Seen a lot worse refs than him anyway.
