Does any statto know where we would figure in a possession percentage league? I was surprised to see during the game yesterday that Stoke only had 39% possession????? (I think this was shown on the Sky sports news analysis on the internet, just before we scored) I know - and fully laud the fact that we won, and we do win or draw a fair number where we are hardly in the game according to the amount of possession held. However, yesterday I would have thought that, at home, playing a weaker(?) team we should have held on to the ball much more than this?
Does this fact worry others?

Well, we cetrtinly didn't retain the ball for very long even when we got it. We hardly put three passes together for most of the game. We seemed to anxious to put the ball upfield and gave it away. The stats seem about right to me. Thing is, however, the stat that really counted. ergo 1-0.

Our ball retention is truly shocking, home or away. To be rectified next season, with better players, and hopefully a game based more on passing than long-balls!
It has tended to cost us away from home, but we've largely got away with it on our own patch.

We also get the ball forward faster, where they liked to play triangles in their back four.
Our retention is shocking at times, but I don't think possession stats tell the entire story of a game.

I believe West Brazil's ball retention is outstanding!!
Its goals that count. I found it funny at times yesterday. Boro spent 10 minutes building from the back with tippy tappying, before the final ball went out for a goal kick.
We replied with one ball from back to front. An instant attack that meant their defenders were always potentially seconds away from a goalscoring opportunity.
The only time I would like us to keep possession is when we are winning and trying to kill the game.
