??? Any old Stokies out there remember the game v Luton 1962/63 when Stan scored and we won 2-0 and were promoted. Help me remember - in the book 'Match of My Life' Jimmy O'Neil reckons Stan ran the length of the half and scored in the Boothen End. I was there and always stood on the Boothen yet recall Stan runnng away from me and towards the Stoke (Town) End? Am I right or is it first signs of becoming sad old git? Gowonstoke!

I was in the Butler. He beat the offside trap I think, running through (towards the Boothen) from, what....forty yards out...and slipped it past the advancing keeper. Only seven at the time, mind, so might be wrong!

wasn't born to see it live, but on the history of stoke video he definately scored at the boothen end - oh, and ran with the ball for 4 miles before dispatching it into the onion bag.

I was there, on the Boothen and he definately ran towards me! I'd say he ran about half the length of the pitch from near the right touchline and he was close to the centre of the penalty area when he shot.
My first and only time on the pitch at the end of the game - VERY muddy it was - as it usually was at the end of each season.
I can still remember the Lord Mayor saying "Stoke are back in the First Division where they belong" ;D

Definitely scored in front of the Boothen End but the weirdest thing was that he put the ball to one side of the keeper and ran to the other side, then round the keeper to pick it up again and put it in the net. Never seen anyone else do this since.

This is quoted from the report of the game in Sunday Mirror 19 May 1963. "Stans goal came at the end of a 50yd sprint. He collected the ball from Jimmy McIlroy just inside his own half and was off like a flash. The Luton defence was caught on the wrong foot, goalkeeper Ron Baynham came out to challenge and was sold a dummy for his pains. Stan veered left and sent the ball into the empty net."
Goal came 2 minutes after half time after Jackie Mudie had put us 1 up in 33rd minute. Looking at tonyrv video seems report a little exaggerated in the distance Stan actually ran with the ball.

Remember it as though it was yesterday.
Was stood on the old open end kop. The pitch was a quagmire and Stan scored after a good 50 yard run at the far end resulting in an extremely dangerous mental on that steep former slag heap.
I am not a fan of standing at footie matches these days but loved the atmosphere then from that end.
Remembering standing there watching Stoke play a side called Radnici to celebrate the floodlights being installed and had to walk virtually all the way back to Uttoxeter as no public transport. Think we may have got a bus to Longton. Just time to get changed for school. Great days.
