never rate Martin O'neil?
Made Wycombe what they are now, did wonders at Leicester and Celtic, and also at Villa

That would suggest that they think Capello will quit when his contract runs out and not renew it. Do we have any reason to think Capello is planning to leave when his contract ends?

I heard that Capello will quit in three years time. Didn't he come out and say it in the press?.
I wouldn't mind O'Neill at all, a good man motivator and a great believer in youth. He has made Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor into two potentially fantastic players. As long as the crook that is Sam Allardyce is nowhere near the running we should be safe, although nobody is quite as bad as McClown.

O'Neill is,clearly,a top manager.
however not sure international football would suit him
also not sure how employing an Ulster Catholic would play with certain sections of the Wembley crowd.
edit: Maclaren by the way has done very well in Holland at a small club.
for me management is very much horses for courses.

There's a school of thought that says O'Neil is quietly being lined up to take over from Sir Alex when he calls it a day at Man U.
Not an unreasonable idea really and I think the challenge would appeal to O'Neil.

The England team is about much more than "certain sections of the wembley crowd" lord - it's about the nation as a whole. Capello is Italian so there's a more than high probability he's Catholic as well. The minute we start worrying about a few bigotted f*ckwits' opinions then we have shot ourselves in the foot. The next England manager could be a Satanist from Macedonia for all I care - as long as he's got the footballing pedigree that's all that matters.

Nik I couldnt agree more however I feel that being from Ulster O'Neill's background would be used against him 1st by the morons you get at Wembley (bit like our block19 'no surrender' singing idiots) & then by the red top press who pick up on such things.
anyway I just think O'Neill is a hand-on manager & the stop/start nature of the job wouldnt suit him.
can remember Taylor being thought of as a top manager before he got it.

I forgot about our esteemed Press - generally i don't give a flying one about the redtops either. I think you are right though - MO'N would much prefer club management. I reckon the Man U job is likely even if not a dead cert.

If he does get the job it will be X amount of years too late! We'd have been in Austria last year had he got it ahead of McClaren. For what he's achieved with clubs compared to where they were when he first took over he has to be one of the top managers in the world.

O'Neill was interviewed for it in 2006 and was never contacted by the FA after to tell him yay or nay. This pissed him off massively and as a result some burnt bridges would have to be rebuilt to persuade him to work for them.
IMHO his approach wouldn't necessarily work at international level but we'll see.
