Absolute worst case scenario.
Newcastle
Arsenal .home 1 points
Chelsea Home 0 points
Stoke away 1 points
Spurs away 1 points
Pompey home 3 points
Liverpool away 0 points
Boro home 3 point
Fulham home 3 point
Aston Villa away 1 point.
42 points maximum
Boro
Stoke away 1 point
Bolton away 1 point
Hull home 3 points
Fulham home 3 points
Arsenal away 0 points
Man Utd home 0 points
Newcastle away 3 points
Villa home 1 point
West Ham away 1 point
40 points maximum
(I know I have Boro and Newcastle picking up 3 points each from their game together, but this is our maximum points for 4th bottom)
So its 43 points as a realistic maximum to guarantee finishing above both Boro and Newcastle, if they hit form and pick up points. Obviously if they both do this then Sunderland, Portsmouth etc will probably drop below them.
Boro are going to have to do really well to reach 40 points, and if they beat Newcastle to achieve this then Newcastle's realistic maximum is 39 points.
So I still think 38 points should be more than enough for us.

Boro have a tough run in so surely it's them, WBA and one more (we hope)?! which you would think would between Newcastle, Pompey, Blackburn and Us, but then like what has been said earlier, Sunderland and Hull are not out of it yet.

Why does the 'absolute worst case scenario' not involve us losing to either of them?

Post by stokebill on Mar 17, 2009 9:49:52 GMT
Obviously it could, sage. I wasn't really predicting exact results, just what they could best expect as a whole. My thoughts were that Boro and Newcastle can't expect to beat every single team near the bottom of the table during the run-in. For them to get, for example, 3 wins and 2 draws from 5 matches against teams near the bottom is our 'worst case scenario', giving them the points tally above. If they do beat every team near the bottom then another side will suffer and get a similar total of points (might well be us). The scenario absolutely a little worse if they beat us though. It could probably be applied to any number of clubs but these 2 look most in peril at the moment.

I wish people would stop predicting people's run ins, it's tempting fate far too much to say Newcastle are down, and look at their run in. We've still got to do our end of the bargain, and despite our run in looking easier on paper, you've still got to go out and beat what's put in front of you.
The end of season games always pull out some big surprises. Newcastle were very unlucky not to get anything out of their recent defeat to Man Utd, so what's to stop them beating Arsenal at home, in front of a sell out, fired up crowd? We're being too complacent by comparing everyones run in and saying who should beat who etc. I don't think many would have had us to beat Arsenal and Villa, but we would have probably all had us to beat Fulham, Hull & Pompey at home.
Unfortunately football isn't played on paper. It's all in our own hands, so lets go out there and do it for ourselves without burdening ourselves with everyone elses run in.

Fair enough comment, John. Predicting the results is just a way to pass an anxiety filled week for most. It is of course unpredictable at this stage of the season, for every unlucky home defeat to Man Utd for Newcastle there's a Liverpool game they could have lost 0-8. I think the object of the exercise now, with 9 games to go, is to look at remaining fixtures as a whole and see what could realistically be achieved, and see how many points we'll need. Rather than look at individual fixtures where anything could happen. I think we can predict this relatively accurately at this point. It might not be Newcastle but some team near the bottom won't beat a top four club during the run in. You're right though of course. If we do what we need to do it doesn't matter. It's all part of the fun though.

We did a similar exercise to this with Fulham last week where people took it in turns to say they would hardly get another point between now and the end of the season and "hey presto" they went away to Bolton first game up and creamed them 3-1.
Now we are trying to do the same job on Newcastle. Truth is neither Newcastle nor Fulham will go down.

We're in serious trouble alright stokebill, we're 18th in case you haven't noticed ;-)
Add to that we have 2 wins from the last 15 games so we're hardly in form either.
On the plus side we have our best players back from injury and suspension and a run in that doesn't look too intimidating.
It can be done but we shouldn't delude ourselves, we are not in a good place right now!

Newcastle have won 1 in 13 (West Brom), have a hellish run-in and no manager. Although the no manager part might be a blessing.

Make that 2 from 17 if you throw in a couple of cup surrenders against lower league opposition in Hartlepool and Derby!
With a record like that I'm not sure we should be predicting Armageddon for anyone else!

Alan Shearer last week expressed his grave concerns over Newcastles chances of avoiding the drop and I for one agree with his overall appraisal. Newcastle United have no divine right to stay up and their team spirit and management set-up is fractured at the moment with no signs of improvement. The team spirit seems to be non-existent and this above all else is classic grounds for relegation, a point that was not lost by Alan Shearer either.
When all is said and done we are the directors of our own destiny and we should not be looking at the other clubs results as a source of inspiration, but instead continue to show our fighting spirit is un-diminished right to the final whistle.
If Tony Pulis is to succeed in this battle to stay up then he must play Ricardo Fuller from the start, as playing "catch-up" in the second half of games is not the way to go.Drop Sidibe and get Fuller on.

Now we are trying to do the same job on Newcastle. Truth is neither Newcastle nor Fulham will go down. I go along with your first point Gods, but you then go on to make an assertion which is just as bad as 'newcastle won't get another point', in other words that 'they won't go down'. It is, in fact, a funny old game ;D and they could go down, or stay up. I reckon they are the sort of 'semi-big' club we could raise our game enough to turn over at home (see also Spurs and Man City). It's the Boro/Blackburn/Wigan games I'm worried about. I so don't want to be worrying on the final day about how other teams are doing, but can't imagine being in any other position. This is Stoke, right?
