I am starting to wonder whether the Pugh money was a real waste. He is patently not a left sided midfielder / winger (he was sold to us as such when bought in) and isnt quick enough at left back.
His best games certainly came at in the centre left role against castle but he hasnt played there since and he certainly wasnt signed to play that role.
TP has clearly also cocked up with Demar - thats well over £600K on left sided players that cant / arent playing in that position. For that reason alone, I doubt very much that Coatesy will open his cheque book again to support this area and I am starting to definately sense a degree of de ja vu about this season in that the best we can probably hope for is an on loan striker.
Sadly I really do feel that while Tone has an eye for a defender, he is blinkered when it comes to the other end of the pitch (bar of course, Riccy who has done fantastic).

In a word, No. Danny Pugh is a good player who we have yet to see the best of.

I see where you are coming from - he has paid decent cash, as you say over £600k , for two left-sided players who seem not to be the answer there.
Pugh looks a composed ball player, but in the middle of the park and not out wide. When Salif is fit, he'd be my preferred partner for him from the present squad.
Those who don't get to see the reserves cannot really make a judgement call on Phillips as he has not even been given much of a chance off the bench (Lil Ant infuriatingly remains a permanent fixture instead!!).
If it was my choice, I'd swallow my pride and offer Forest £750k for Commons - the last decent natural left midfielder we had at the club.

One defeat and individual players are being knocked. Didn't hear too many "waste of money" questions being asked after his impressive outings prior to the Charlton game.

Read the message Neutron
People cant say anything on here without been accused of being a 'knocker'
I was there last night and have seen virtually all of his left sided performances and the point that I am making is that most people seem to acknowledge that we are short on the left but HAVE spent money and are unlikely to spend more in that area of the field.

I am with the topic originator, though whether he is a waste of money is open to debate.
One thing for certain, left midfield is seemingly the worst of the 3 positions that he has played for us. He was anonymous again last night, not for the first time when played wide left.
A real concern, when this is the position he was bought in to play!
I also agree with Jezza, Kris Commons would be an ideal target for us if we could get him! We need someone out wide to occupy a full-back with pace and trickery.
Maybe Hoekstra could come out of retirement!

The tabloids claim QPR have offered £1.5m for Commons.
Seems a bit excessive as he's available on a Bosman in the summer after signing a 1-yr deal with Forest last summer?

I hadn't seen that Grapey (but, then you always are first with the news! ;D). My £750k comment was based on his being out of contract in the summer, but if QPR are throwing around the cash of Mittal, Briatore and Ecclestone to that excess, we can legitimately claim to be blown out of the water, seeing as between them they are richer than most countries!!

I can't say a bad word about most of Pugh's performances to date but I've said exactly the same thing as stokemark myself.
He lacks pace and can't beat a man so that rules him out of the left-wing slot.
He passes very well and gets forward from left-back but gets beaten in the air a lot and can get done for pace quite easily.
His best position for us has certainly been with him in centre midfield but I'm still not sure whether he's good enough to play there week in, week out for a promotion-chasing side. You'd hope for someone a bit more creative alongside Diao as well.
I get the feeling he's a player who may well suffer at Stoke because of his versatility.

£1.5m is indeed OTT for Commons given his contract situation but isnt it money no object @ QPR?

I suppose if QPR decide they want a player, they'll eventually get him if the player is willing to move! But other clubs will be aware of their situation and probably ask for more money than they normally would. I reckon Commons could have gone somewhere for less than a million if QPR weren't interested.
As for Pugh, he's the kind of player we need around this time of year (and since we signed him) with the fixture build up... seems fit and discaplined, versatile and capable in a few positions, commited and definately a team player! Reminds me of watching Creswell out of position, you know he's more of an asset in his 1st choice position, but gives everything for the team wherever he's put.

Hated by our support? Personally I "hate" to see substandard footballers pull on the red and white striped shirt, "hate" to see us lose to teams we should be beating, "hate" to see us not bringing in quality players to fill glaring voids in our squad, and would "hate" to see us miss out on promotion when it is there for the taking this season.
It would be a shame (not that it looks like we are in with a sniff), if a player who is clearly far better than any options we currently possess to play left midfield was not brought back to the club because certain people "hate" him.
I'm glad it's not your choice either, you narrow-minded berk.
