Looking to do a media project on all of Stoke's players who played for England while being at Stoke.
Neil Franklin is one of the players I'm looking at, does anybody have any memories of him - I realise it was a long time ago but fathers (or mothers) may have spoken about him etc.
If anybody knows anybody who would be interested in taking part I'm hoping to put it together and give it to local radio, tv and put it on the net too.
Knowles maybe you have some ideas?
Thanks
BB

Right well I'm 22 and a Broadcast Journalist. Thanks for the unhelpful and equally as funny comment though.

How times have changed! www.football-england.com/neil_franklin.htmlOn top of that, Franklin was an outstanding footballer. He viewed the hoofed clearance with disdain, except when strictly necessary, and believed the responsibility of "playing football" was as much his as anyone elses in the side. Therefore a dangerous centre into the Stoke City penalty area was as likely to lead to a counter attack as a chance on goal. Even under the severest pressure Franklin was loath to desert his principles

A bit before my time as a fan (I was 4 when he left Stoke for Bogota) but my dad always reckoned he was the finest ball playing centre back he had seen. Of course he will always be associated with "the Bogota affair" which is a pity because it terminated his Stoke career and his England one as well. The A to Z of Stoke City (which I have loaned to Luke 45 at the moment) has a decent bit about him and if you google Franklin and Bogota you'll find more stuff than you can shake a stick at. Here is his obituary from the Independent www.independent.co.uk/news/people/obituaryneil-franklin-1318228.html

I once went to look at a house that was owned by his nephew or niece, we got talking because they had an England cap framed on the wall. I'd have bought the house there and then but the missus didn't like the curtains. Hope that helps.

I bet Ray Johnson's got some archive film, have you tried him? And he comes up in the Sentinel regularly still, someone there might know if there any relatives still living.

His nephew lives next door to me Mum. He was only telling me some of his stories the other week. Found it quite amazing really as to how he found it the norm to travel down to Wembley every month or so to see 'Uncle Neil' play for England. Anyways, I'll have a word with him sometime this week mate. He's an absolute gent, and the way he talks about him, I'm sure he'll be glad to to summat to remember him. I'll let you know.

My Dad reckoned that if Franklin had not have gone to Bogota, then Billy Wright would never have been heard of!

Hello, I am Neil Franklin's Grandson. My Mum (Neil's daughter) and my Uncle Gary (Neil's son) are both still alive and kicking. My Mum and Dad have season tickets so are over in Stoke regular (they live in Derby) and my Uncle lives on the outskirts of Stoke.
Nice to see lots of people have good memories, or memories passed down of my Grandad. He did love his Bowls in his later years.
