Our Current team
Sorrensen,Wilko,Shawcross,Faye,Higgy,Lawrence,Whelan,Delap,Etherington,Beatie,Fuller
Stoke City 1984:
Corrigan, Maskery, Spearing, McIlroy, Dyson, Bould, Painter, Bertschin, Phil Heath, Hudson, Chamberlain
Noticeable - No non British players!
Would our current team have been relegated in 1984?
PS this team pinched off an earlier thread - thanks

dont forget tnat Hudon & Chambo barely played in 84-85 due to injuries.
Corrigan was one of a mere 5 goalkeepers that season Bertschin didnt come in until late on & flopped (till the following season) too many games that year with Panner & Phil Heath upfront Ebanks got games
at the end of the day any side with Dyson it deserves to go down
stick Dyson in the current side (for either Ryan or Abdy) & we would be cast adrift at the bottom.
on the other hand stick Beattie in the 84-85 side and.....we would still have gone down (but with at least 10 more points).
would TP have played a fit Chambo (given he didnt track back)? TP would have loved Bould & Maskery mind.

Missed that last season in the top flight cause in the Falklands for 6 months, but that season was to be honest, as bad as derbys last season. i seriously thought we would do the same this time, but credit where credit is due ,well done Sir Tone and all at Stoke !!!

I'd put Steve Bould in the current team. Hudson was not himself that season but I would still have him. Chamberlain was lazy and TP would have kicked him from one end of the ground to the other then loaned him out somewhere. Sammy McIlroy was great, I'd have him for cover and experience. The rest were punching well above their weight and needed relegating badly.

Things were so bad our top goal scorer was technically Dyson 3 goals and 3 own goals, ahhh how great we were that season. The real top scorer I think was Paint-a-spot with 5 goals.
And who remembers losing 2-3 to Norwich and only 4,000 crowd, how embarrassing were we ahh the memories

Only vague memoies of this horror season, but I saw some old footage of us recently on ESPN classic channel (442). We were away at Forest and actually drew the game 1-1 (George Berry scored). We should have won that game juding by the highlights but christ we had a poor looking side. Steve Bould at full back was cack. I wouldn`t swap any of them for the current starting eleven.

You look at that team and wonder how we managed to go down, some real quality there, apart from Paul Dyson, possibly the worst defender I ever saw down Stoke.

It is Robbie James, sadly dead now. Was it a record year for taches? I counted 7 + Georgie Berry and I reckon Paul Maguire sported one now and again too - 8 taches and a beard -get in.

That was a very bad team really - that season is permanently etched into my memory! Remember though that Huddy barely played all season due to injury, Peter Fox's injury left us with a series of loan keepers, most of them over the hill or just poor, we had Wayne Ebanks in central midfield (oh dear .. !) for most of the first part of the season, Paul Dyson makes Sonko look like Beckenbauer, and Painter was simply too lightweight to score goals at that level.

I still say the reason we went down that season was cause we changed the strip to that shitty pin stripe one !! Oh......and the team was shit as well !! ha ha

Bloody hell, Robbie James. He presented me with a player of the year award at school. Or was it Ladsndads? And Peter Fox was a short arse for a keeper. That was the first season that I went to every home game. Dreadful. It's where I learnt the art of quiet contemplation as a fifteen year old.

Chambo would have walked into the current team. On his day he was unplayable.
Sammy Mac far better than what we have now.

That photo is from the previous season. Maguire's reward for scoring the four goals that kept us up the previous season was a free transfer. The holocaust squad was even weaker than the one shown.

I wasn't totally sure if it was the season of doom, or the one prior, however Hudson didn't come until late on in the season we stayed up ?............................. so wouldn't of been in the team photo.

Pictures of footballers from the Eighties are rather amusing. Blokes in their late twenties/early thirties look middle-aged, especially when sporting moustaches.
