Leeds 1 Stoke 3 ... One of my favourite away days ever . Remember getting my ticket for the " Football Special " on the morning of the game and I was number 65 !! There was probably only about 250 of us in total in the ground and we were 1-0 down after 5 mins ..... Then Chapman ( Who's name had been booed by the Stoke fans when the teams were announced ! ) scored a hat trick !! Was looking at the attendance for that day and it was only 16,350 for a top flight game at Leeds... That was a pretty typical attendance in that Season, How times have changed ! 28 years ago today.... Christ I'm getting old

Recession ,and the very real exisitance of footie violence resulted in many turning their back on the game , attendances down everywhere , dark days for football What remained of crowds was made up of a much higher percentage of 'lads' than exisits these days Of course many will still have people believe crowds and away followings were huge and that you've left a nought off the ticket number .. usually cos they remember the once or twice a season that there was a full turnout In truth some of the specials in that era were tiny ..at a time when more and more of what remained of away followings ( at clubs up and down the country )were moving over to regularly travelling by 'service train'..or the 'ordinary' as a way of dodging 'welcoming commitees from oppo fans and the police..difficult to tell the two aprt at times as regard their behaviour and attitude to away fans For all that wouldn't have missed it for the world BTW do you remember Chapman's hatrick was greeted with the ' Marching on with Chapman ' song

I was at said game i seem to remember Brian Flynn scoring in 1st few mins for Leeds before Chapman took over..and to think the Stoke fans used to slaughter him when he always knew where the net was ??? Back on track my over-riding memory of that day was people openly advertising the National Front with handouts etc etc right in front of the police...how times change!!!!!!

Another memory of the day was someone hanging out of the train window at Stockport Station shouting abuse as some copper from the Transport Police who used to travel on the trains stood behind him.....
Everyone in the carriage knew he was there except the lad himself... Evreyone pissed themselves laughing including the Copper ! ;D
