Before I start, I know and we all know that Cresswell is not a Premier League player, and he shouldn't be starting games. However, Cresswell doesn't pick the team, the manager does, so any qualms should be in TP's direction and not that of Cresswell, both on and off the pitch.
Andy Cooke wasn't the worlds best footballer, however he did a lot of running and contributed with goals for the team, he was a Stoke City hero.
Richard Cresswell who isn't the worlds best footballer, however he does a lot of running and contributes with goals for the team (lots and lots of vital goals last season, less so this season, but that is understandable.)
What I am trying to get at is, why have a lot of 'supporters' now starting to bad mouth 'tryers' like Cresswell, whereby in the past, they were heroes. Is this what the Premier League brings out in 'fans?'
Cresswell is a model professional, both on and off the pitch, he gives 100% everytime he puts on the red and white, it is not his fault he isn't good enough, but continually gets picked. What must Richard think of the abuse that is thrown his way by 'fans'?
In comparison to the model professional that Cresswell is, we have another striker on our books that has attacked a fellow teammate, become very lazy and disinterested, but woe betide you if you speak out against this 'hero.'
Only 5 years ago, Cresswell would have been a hero to a lot of fans, whereas now it feels as if he is hated for not being good enough. Not good enough? I know a certain team, that we all love, that were being touted as 'not good enough' back in August and look at them now.

He gets cheered on doesn't he, and always will, but turning a blind eye to his level of shitness because he tries is out of the question.
He is rubbish, and has cost us many points this season. He can try all he likes but I would take another Fuller over Cresswell anyday, even though he has his moments of petiness he has skill in abundance.
It is very annoying Cressy is picked over other players time and time again.
If Cresswell had the skill to match his effort we would have a hero.

He's jsut woeful, i'm not denying he runs, though i'd rather have a lazy arse player like Fuller that can score than a runner that can't hit a Barn Door with a Banjo!

He doesn't deserve booing as, attitude-wise, he is a model pro. But the fact he gets approximately £1m-a-year for his troubles does add to the semi-farcical nature of the Cresswell 'situation'.
If his commendable attitude was allied to any hint of Premier League ability, we'd be on a winner. As it isn't, I'm at a loss to see what he's supposed to be bringing to the table at this level.

I don't think anyone is bad-mouthing Cresswell on a personal level TBH - the bloke has received nothing but support from the stands both home and away all season.
The problem is that Richard Cresswell has now become the epitome of one our manager's most annoying traits - stubborness. Cressy is clearly not a Prem standard footballer - anyone who has seen him play this year could not disagree. Yes he runs, tries and covers as many blades of grass in a game as Fuller does in a season, but he just does not possess the quality required at this level. There are clearly (in our eyes) better players who could come into the squad and (in our opinion) offer so much more - Lawrence, Tonge and Soares are the players most quoted on here.
The problem now is that Cresswell is becoming perceived as a kind of "teacher's pet" by the support - and God knows we all hate one of those.
My opinion, for what it's worth is that we should have shipped him out in January. He could have left with his stock high - an established Championship player with a wealth of Premier League experience - enough to command a nice 2-3 year contract with an ambitious Championship club. Sadly, I fear, as the season progresses he will become more of a pantomime figure - it can't be long before the media start to pick up on his poor performances and overall lack of quality and where then?
I have the utmost respect for Cressy and wish him nothing but good but I worry that he is becoming a pawn in one of TP's little games that he likes to play and it won't do him any good in the long run.

On the subject of "not good enough", didn't we sell Iwelumo because he was percievd to be "not good enough" for the Championship? I think we all fell for that one, didn't we?

But he was never going to be a big scorer for us. God knows he was with us long enough. Sometimes it just doesn't work out for a player at a certain club for all sorts of reasons.

This time last year this board and P&G was full of people bemoaning the fact that Mama wasn't good enough, Pulis was tactically inept and we were going to blow promotion because of this.
As we know we got promotion and on 10/1/09 Mama was announced as the fans player of the year.
This year Cresswell's taking the stick, Pulis is still tactically inept and apparently some people are actually hoping we get relegated to prove a point.
I'm not saying Cresswell will be player of the year in 2010, but it does show how things can change. An outfield of 10 Richard Cresswells would get us relegated. So would an outfield of 10 James Beatties. The point being football teams have to be a blend of skills and workrate.
Our squad has come a long way in a short time and when we stay up Pulis will again up the quality of the squad and perhaps Richard will leave us. If so I'll always be grateful for the important part he played in our promotion and the way he has unselfishly put aside his own ego to play in a hard working wide role when in fact he's a centre forward.

He shouldn't be in the team . Can't argue with that. but thats not the issue here. No one can argue that he isn't good enough. he is a squad player at best. but why give Cressie the abuse, when it blatantly isn't his fault? when Tony picks him, is he supposed to turn around and say, "sorry tp. i can't play for you today. the fans would rather me not play."? he'd be turning his back on the team. (although admittedly we may win...) your qualm is with tony, not cressie.

this is absolutely the best thread regarding Richard Cresswell.... if you were a professional footballer and you get handed a first team shirt... what do you do?
Sorry boss... I'm just not up to it!!! give it to some other guy who has more ability and may put in a telling cross (with no one on the end of it) or someone with more quality.
I love to play football... I play at Keele with some guys that I used to work with (much younger than me).... I have 3 out of 10 ability, but I will run and chase and play TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY and I get to play and I will do my BEST in a Yellow or red Vest.... it's exactly the same!!!! If you get the opportunity to play would you hand your top to the boss and say I should be playing in a lower division...?
I DON@T THINK SO""""""!!!!

We could carry Cookie as the level of football afforded us that... This season is different gravy altogether, we are already at a disadvantage against most teams so to play someone like Cressy is suicide. The facts and stats speak for themselves this season, how effective was his running and effort when we go 3-0 down inside half an hour against Blackburn and Spurs - evidently not very effective at all.
Survival is the goal, sentimentality goes out the window regardless of who you are.

while i agree with most creswell shouldnt be repeatedly selected,on this board we have a tendency to slate certain players almost to the point of humiliation. When we beat Arsenal,Villa,Sunderland,Man city every player is an absolute hero, when we then lose in come the enemy tearing into them like a pack of wolves. On that basis this wont stop until were top of the premier league (weve got a long wait ahead) Whilst its good to have all views some posts are destructive criticism not constructive. 1 year ago a season in the prem was just a dream,in june last year to beat derbys total and 4th from bottom would be great guaranteeing another year in this division Ill stick my neck out we will finish out of the bottom 3 this squad is capable and will do it.

In all fairness, a lot of people I know were saying to drop him last year! And he was one of the big reasons we came up.
I think a big problem is that cresser just isnt well liked.

lets face facts, he gives 110% every game, and nobody can knock him for that, but he aint good enough. in the games hes started this season he as contributed nothing! no shots on target and no assists! he is toss, he would do someone a great job in the championship like he did us, but he simply looks out of his depth in the prem. its a shame beacause 99% of fans can see he aint good enough but pulis cant! its going end up in a lot of nasty abuse for cresswell, and that could knock his confidence. but theirs only one man to blame, and thats pulis

FFS....I don't see anyone giving Cresswell personal abuse!!!!!!
The responsibility lies squarely on the shoulders of our manager
What i see on this board is an honest assessment of his abilities (or lack of) He is clearly out of his depth. The manager's stubborness and favouritism combined with his lack of tactical acumen and inability to use certain players is of great concern to many fans.......What is wrong with that???????

Criticism of Cresswell has in myview alwys been cricism of the manager not Cresswell individually+. Apart from his lack of ability and the fact he jumps out of tackles I have no axe to grind wirth Cresswell but his continued and preferred selection over others is the thing which people have been crticising.
WE must all wonder at the millions that have been wasted if he is a better man than several we have bought this year because we have all had it drummed into us "that there is no point bringing somebody in unless they are better than what we have got"
No I do not dislike Cressweel as such and would never boo him but I confess I do groan sometimes outwardly when he misses a good chance or gives the ball away in a dangerous position or gives a dangerous free kick away but e does work ard so we must continue to select him.

For what he did last year he shouldn't get the level of criticism he gets - end of. I personally don't think he should be playing but that doesn't mean he should get the stick he gets on here from people who should know better. The bloke played a MASSIVE part in our promotion and shouldn't ever have to put his hand in his pocket in any Stoke boozer (despite his huge salary!) but I worry that TP's persistence in playing him is going to leave a sour taste with some of our support where Dickie is concerned and that shouldn't happen. It isn't Cress' fault he gets picked; what do people expect him to say..."err gaffer have you perhaps thought you should play Xyz instead of me?" I was hoping Cress would get a move to a Championship club and we'd be left with memories of the vital goals he scored last year, sadly with TP's reluctance to leave him out that may not be how Cress is remembered. (By the way, that Xyz is some player; good pace, great first touch and knows where the onion bag is! )
